Forbes’ list of ‘India’s 100 Richest’ 2024 has revealed that the collective wealth of the richest tycoons of the country has surpassed the trillion dollar milestone for the first time. Mukesh Ambani has topped the list with an estimated net worth of $119.5 billion, followed by Gautam Adani with $116 billion.

The collective worth of India’s wealthiest is $1.1 trillion, which is twice their worth in 2019 and added $316 billion in just the past 12 months, the report by Forbes said. More than 80% of the richest are wealthier, and 58 of them have added $1 billion or more to their net worth. The top five collectively gained almost $120 billion while the top 12 on the list account for nearly half of the combined wealth of the top 100, the report added.

The list has been compiled based on shareholding and financial data sourced from families and individuals, stock exchanges, analysts, and regulatory agencies in India, according to the report. Notably, it is different from the World’s Billionaires list as 'India’s 100 Richest' list combines the wealth of families to rank the members.

Furthermore, the list includes foreign citizens with businesses in India or other ties to the country, and citizens who don’t reside in the country but have businesses or other significant ties here.

The top 5
  • Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, holds the first spot with an estimated net worth of $119.5 billion. He’s also the second-biggest gainer, in dollar terms, adding $27.5 billion just this year.

  • Second on the list is Gautam Adani and family with an estimated net worth of $116 billion. He gained the most this year, adding $48 billion to the family with his brother Vinod.

  • Savitri Jindal, the richest woman in India, takes third place with an estimated net worth of $43.7 billion.

  • The fourth place is taken by Shiv Nadar, the chairperson of HLC Enterprise, with an estimated net worth of $40.2 billion.

  • Dilip Shanghvi and family, who run Sun Pharmaceuticals, secured the fifth spot with an estimated net worth of $32.4 billion.

The next five on the list are: Radhakishan Damani and family ($31.5 billion estimated net worth), Sunil Mittal and family ($30.7 billion estimated net worth), Kumar Birla ($24.8 billion estimated net worth), Cyrus Poonawalla ($24.5 billion estimated net worth), and the Bajaj Family ($23.4 billion estimated net worth).

While the youngest person on the list is brokerage platform Zerodha’s co-founder Nikhil Kamath, the list now has nine women, one up from the previous year’s eight. Mahima Datla, MD of vaccine producer Biological E, is the new woman entrant.

Some other new entrants are B Partha Saradhi Reddy, founder of Hetero Labs; Harish Ahuja, MD of Shahi Exports; and Surender Saluja, founder and chairman of Premier Energies.
