SUMMARY

The developer from Delhi who requested Reliance to pay for his course at Cambridge in return for the JioHotstar.com domain he purchased in 2023 has now decided to take the site offline. Mentioning that his parents are concerned about him and he does not have the resources to fight this, he thanked everyone who supported him.

Reliance and Walt Disney signed a deal worth $8.5 billion to merge Star and Viacom18 in February

The Delhi software developer, the ‘dreamer’ who bought the domain name called JioHotstar.com anticipating that Reliance could soon carry out a merger for Disney+ Hotstar and name it JioHotstar, is now looking to take himself out of the mix because his parents are concerned.

While it’s a whole other discussion if Reliance was planning to name the merger that or not, the developer here made the bold move to ask the company to pay for his full-time degree at Cambridge University in exchange for the domain.

In his earlier update, he mentioned that his request for the funding was denied by Reliance and the company is planning to take legal action. He added that he wouldn't be able to stand against Reliance and ended the message by saying that he hoped Reliance would help him and asked for help from legal professionals around the world.

The new update

In an update posted on JioHotstar.com on Friday, October 25, the developer opened his message with, 'Thank You People of Internet'. He noted that he received overwhelming support from lawyers—ranging from law professionals at High Courts and the Supreme Court of India to the ones working in Cambridge, London, California, Texas and Berlin.

The developer said that while he is aware that he can fight for the domain as it is his right, his parents are extremely worried for him.

“My parents read the news and they are worried, actually super super worried. Itna bhi viral nhi hona tha yaar. Shayad legal battle phir bhi handle ho jaye, bhai saab maa baap ka samjhana is so difficult. Good Kalesh today. Although many legal minds have suggested that I should hold this domain and fight for it, acquiring a domain is like an asset, and there is nothing illegal in buying something in the hope that its price will appreciate, as long as I don't impersonate this site as the official site of Reliance or try to sell something on behalf of Jio or Hotstar or make money out of it. I am the legitimate owner of this domain and have the right to hold this domain as long as I wish. I might not be able to use it for anything, but holding it as a showpiece without infringing on anyone's trademark is completely legal. I can be restrained from using this domain or even keep this site online, but can't be forced to give up the domain,” he wrote in his post.

Saying that he does not have the time or the resources to pursue a legal course of action against Reliance, he added that he would comply with a legal notice if he gets one.

“Kya pata Reliance ki wajh se meri diwali bhi badiya ho jaye,” he remarked, still hanging on to the hope that the company would look at this with ‘a compassionate side’ and offer him a ‘respectable sum’ for the domain.
In a message that seems to be an adieu from him to the people who supported him on social media, he wrote, “Thank you everybody who posted kind words for me on social media, and even to those who were not so kind. Some of you really think I am some super smart hacker, who cracked this. Even I really wish I was. Pretty disheartening but hota hai, hopefully another opportunity will strike soon to go to Cambridge (without so much legal drama). If you feel you have the time and resources for legal stuff or you live in a country where Jio is not a trademark, you can instantly buy this domain from NameCheap.com at 1/10th of original ask. I hope if Reliance needs this domain, they consider buying it. I had no malicious intent, just the hope for a better future. Bye Bye. This site will go offline soon.”

Once again, he signed off his post with, ‘A Dreamer’.
