SUMMARY

Any mistake, even a minor one, like an outdated address or incomplete e-verification, can cause a delay in refund processing. However, if you have done everything correctly, you can receive your refund within hours as well.

E-verification or ITR is necessary for receiving refunds.

If you filed your income tax return early, in June itself, but still haven’t received your refund, it can lead to understandable frustration. Early ITR filers often get restless waiting for their refund, and end up tagging the IT Department on various social media platforms to get an answer.

Now that the ITR filing deadline is near, it's even more frustrating for some to have not received their refund. Let’s look at why this could be happening.

How much time does the refund take to be credited?

Generally, refund processing takes 4-5 weeks, as per the IT Department’s official website. The processing of the refund usually starts only after the return is e-verified by the taxpayer. Some receive the refund within hours, while some wait for weeks before they get the happy “ITR refund of ₹XXXXX has been credited to your bank account” message.

Why is your refund processing delayed?

Here are some of the reasons that can lead to a delay in refund processing, as per tax experts:

  • If your PAN is inoperative, the refund will not be processed. You also see a warning message to link your PAN with the Aadhaar.

  • If your bank account is not pre-validated, your refund will be delayed. Ensure you’re registering your bank account and verifying to receive a timely refund.

  • If your bank account details don’t match the PAN details, your refund will be delayed.

  • If you have entered an invalid IFSC, the refund processing will fail.

  • If the bank account you mentioned in the ITR is closed, you will not receive a refund.

  • If the tax credit in your ITR doesn’t match your Annual Information Statement (AIS), your refund would be delayed.

Any mistake, even a minor one, like an outdated address or incomplete e-verification, can lead to a delay in refund processing.

"Delay in refund can happen if taxpayers do not complete the e-verification procedure properly," said CA Siddharth Maurya, Founder & Managing Director of Vibhavangal Anukulakara Private Limited.

Maurya added, "Any discrepancy, even the slightest mismatch, between the amount declared in the return by the taxpayer and the amount reported by employers, banks, or financial institutions may delay your refund.”

Remember that if you don’t verify your ITR within 30 days of filing, your return will become invalid. E-verification is necessary for receiving refunds.

Social media reactions

Many social media users have talked about the refund delay and shared their frustration. Some have also mentioned that they need the money and are waiting for the refund desperately.

Several taxpayers have been waiting since June or July for their refunds.

“My Itr is showing under process from 13th of july. I have medical issue in my family could you please check this,” a user wrote on X.

While refund delays can infuriate you, and even understandably so, remember that you’ll receive the refund if you have filled all the details correctly and there is no error pending from your side. Note that if you wait till the last minute to file your ITR, your tax refund could be delayed as the IT department receives too many filings near the deadline.
