"Kind Attention Taxpayers! The Excel Utility for ITR-5 for Assessment Year 2026–27 is now available on the Income Tax e-Filing portal," income etax department posted on social media platform X.

Who is eligible to use this ITR-5?

This Form can be used by a person being a firm, Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), Association of Persons (AOP), Body of Individuals (BOI), Artificial Juridical Person (AJP) referred to in clause (vii) of section 2(31), local authority referred to in clause (vi) of section 2(31), representative assessee referred to in section 160(1)(iii) or (iv), cooperative society, society registered underSocieties Registration Act, 1860 or under any other law of any State, trust other than trusts eligible to file Form ITR-7, estate of deceased person, estate of an insolvent, business trust referred to in section 139(4E) and investments fund referred to in section 139(4F).

However, a person who is required to file the return of income under section 139(4A) or 139(4B) or 139(4D) shall not use this form.

In other words, this return form is generally not relevant for individual taxpayers.

Who cannot file the ITR-5 form?

  • Individual assesses

  • Hindu Undivided Family (HUF)

  • Company

  • Taxpayers who must file tax returns in Form ITR-7, under Sections 139(4A), 139(4B), 139(4C), 139(4D), 139(4E) or 139(4F)

ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3 and ITR-4 were enabled earlier

Before enabling online filing for ITR-5, the Income Tax Department had already activated the e-filing facility for ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3 and ITR-4 in phases. Excel utilities for ITR-1 and ITR-4 were released on May 15, followed by online filing for ITR-2 on May 27. The department enabled both the online filing facility and the Excel utility for ITR-3 on June 19. With ITR-5 now available, more taxpayer categories can file their income tax returns online for Assessment Year 2026-27.
