ITR filing 2025: Top reasons why your refund might be delayed
If you have filed your ITR but haven't received the refund, here are some reasons behind the delay:
If you haven’t e-verified your return, you won't receive your refund, as the ITR filing process remains incomplete without verification.
If you have made any errors in your ITR, such as mismatched information, your ITR can take longer to be processed.
ITR processing takes longer if you filed it near the due date, as the IT department receives too many filings.
If you haven’t validated your bank account or if the bank account details are incorrect, your refund processing will be delayed.
Very small errors, like an outdated mailing address or wrong account number, can cause delays in the return and refund processing.
If there is a TDS mismatch between Form 26AS and your return, the refund processing can take longer.
Ensure that your PAN is active, because if your PAN is inoperative, your refund won’t be processed until you link your PAN with your Aadhaar.

ITR filing query Live: What to do if you receive an ITR intimation?
An ITR intimation is a notification sent by the Income Tax Department on whether the details you filled in your return match their data or not. Sent under Section 143(1), it informs taxpayers if the return has been accepted, if they are eligible for a refund and if there's any additional tax liability.
You must read the intimation carefully and respond to it. If you fail to respond to the intimation, the return is processed after making necessary adjustments without giving you any opportunity to explain or clarify your side.

ITR filing query 2025: What is the penalty for filing an updated return?
An updated return (ITR-U) is filed to correct errors or omissions made in a previous ITR.
ITR-U can be filed within four years from the end of the relevant assessment year. Taxpayers can also file it if they missed filing their return or missed the revised/belated return filing deadline.
If you file an updated return within 12 months from the end of the assessment year, you will have to pay an additional 25% of the aggregate tax and interest. This can go up to 70% based on when the ITR is filed:
Filed within 12 months: 25% of an additional tax on aggregate tax and interest
Filed between 12 and 24 months: 50% of an additional tax on aggregate tax and interest

An updated return (ITR-U) allows taxpayers to voluntarily comply and fix any errors/omissions in their ITR to avoid penalties or litigation. It can be filed even if the taxpayer didn't file an original, revised or belated return.
It can be filed if you:
Missed both the ITR filing deadline and the belated return filing deadline
Misreported some income
Reported an income under the wrong head
It can also be filed if unabsorbed depreciation needs to be reduced, tax credit needs to be reduced, or tax paid was not calculated correctly.
However, it cannot be filed in case of a NIL return or a loss return, to claim or increase a refund or to reduce tax liability.

ITR filing query: What if you receive notice under Section 148?
If the assessment officer (AO), who analyses your ITR, finds an error or discrepancy in your income details, he/she can send you a notice under Section 148 for income escaping assessment.
However, before sending this notice, the AO needs to conduct an inquiry under Section 148A with the prior approval of the specified authority, in which the taxpayer will be allowed to explain their side.
If you have received such notice, ensure that you respond within 30 days. In case the AO is not satisfied with your explanation, he/she can reopen the case and issue a notice under this section.
Importantly, this notice can be issued within three years and three months from the end of the relevant assessment year, and even within five years and three months from the end of the relevant assessment year if the evaded tax is claimed to be over ₹50 lakh.

Refund processing can take up to 9 months, and with the huge rush seen in the last two days (September 15 and September 16), the IT department is expected to process returns gradually.

ITR filing 2025 query: Know when to select old regime if salaried
Further, here are some things you can consider:
If your income from sources, including salary, interest, etc., is below ₹7.75 lakh, you can go with the new regime because income up to ₹7.75 lakh is tax-free in the new regime (with ₹25,000 tax rebate provided under Section 87A and the ₹75,000 standard deduction).
If your income is between ₹8 lakh and ₹15 lakh, you must choose based on how many deductions you can claim. For example, for those with a ₹10 lakh salary, the old tax regime is beneficial if the total deductions and allowances are above ₹3.5 lakh.

ITR filing 2025: What if I select the wrong tax regime while filing ITR
If you're yet to file ITR for AY26, ensure you're filing under the correct regime as selecting the wrong one for you can result in higher tax liability and lower refunds.
The old tax regime has higher tax slabs but allows various deductions and exemptions like HRA, LTA, 80C (PF, ELSS, insurance), 80D (medical insurance), home loan interest, etc.
The new tax regime, on the other hand, has lower tax slabs but no major deductions/exemptions.
Remember that you can't change tax regime after the due date, so file before the deadline (September 16).

If any tax, interest, or penalty is due from your end, the tax department will send you a notice under Section 156 to demand additional payment.

ITR filing 2025: What is a tax challan?
The income tax challan is a form that taxpayers need to submit when paying their tax liability. The IT department has various types of challans for different purposes.
While filing ITR on the due date, you might face issues with the challan (delay in generation, payment confirmation, etc). This might be because of the heavy load on the e-filing portal.
In case this happens, you can try alternative payment methods (if possible). If you've made the payment but it's not visible, wait for some time instead of trying to make another payment. Remember to save proof of payment for the future.
Note: If your payment fails, do not quote fake challan numbers. Wait and retry.

ITR filing 2025: Last-minute things to remember while filing your return
If you haven't filed your ITR yet, there's no better time than now. Here are some things you should remember while filing your ITR:
Enter your income details accurately and ensure that the data you provide matches Form 26AS/AIS. In case the AIS has missing details, you still need to report them by filling them in manually.
If you have claimed a TDS refund or credit, but it's missing in your Form 26AS, the system could trigger a notice. However, if you have proof of the TDS (like Form 16), you can submit it when the IT department asks.
Declare capital gains correctly. If you sold shares, mutual funds, property, etc., during the previous financial year, you must declare capital gains (short-term or long-term).
Claiming high deductions under sections like 80C and 80D can open your return to scrutiny by the IT department. Enter deduction and exemption details carefully and ensure you haven't claimed any excess refund.
You must file the correct ITR form. Filing the wrong type of ITR, like ITR-1 when you have capital gains, can be a ground for scrutiny.
To avoid notices and penalties, ensure accuracy in your return. Double-check everything you submit with your Form 26AS, AIS and TIS before submitting.

ITR filing 2025: Will CBDT extend the deadline again?
Taxpayers must not wait for the deadline to be extended again, because the CBDT has already provided another one-day extension due to technical glitches seen on the portal on September 15.
This is after the tax department extended the original July 31 deadline to September 15 due to multiple changes in the ITR forms.
It is very unlikely for another extension to be announced, especially when taxpayers and professionals have been asking for the deadline to be extended to September 30, but the IT department didn't until it was necessary due to technical glitches.
While the CBDT didn't mention technical glitches in its notice on the one-day extension, it said, "To enable changes in the utilities, the e-filing portal will remain in maintenance mode from 12:00 AM to 02:30 AM on 16th September 2025."
If you haven't filed your ITR yet, consider this your golden opportunity to avoid penalties and other charges, and do it before the due date ends today.
