Key August 2026 income tax deadlines taxpayers should know

August 7: TDS/TCS payment deadline

Employers, businesses and other deductors must deposit tax deducted or collected during July 2026 by August 7.

August 15: TDS/TCS certificates and quarterly compliance

Tax deductors and collectors have deadlines related to issuing TDS/TCS certificates for the April-June 2026 quarter.

August 31: Important ITR deadline for certain taxpayers

Taxpayers who could not be covered under the July 31 deadline because of their category have to file their income tax return by August 31.

This includes:
  • assessees having income from business or profession whose accounts are not required to be audited and who are not covered under transfer pricing provisions;

  • eligible partners of firms covered under specified conditions.

August 31: Other forms linked to deductions and tax benefits

Some taxpayers may also need to submit specific forms by August 31 to claim certain benefits, including:

Form 10BA for taxpayers claiming deduction under Section 80GG for rent paid;

Form 10E for taxpayers claiming relief under Section 89 for salary arrears;

Form 10-EE for taxpayers opting for relief under Section 89A relating to retirement benefit accounts in notified countries;

Other prescribed forms applicable to specific taxpayers.

Who should pay attention?

  • Business owners and professionals

  • Partners in firms

  • Taxpayers claiming specific deductions

  • Individuals with salary arrears or foreign retirement accounts

  • Entities with additional reporting obligations

Filing an ITR is only one part of staying tax-compliant. As August brings several important deadlines, taxpayers should check whether any payments, forms or additional disclosures apply to them. A timely review can help avoid unnecessary follow-ups and keep financial records in order.

August 31 ITR filing deadline

The August 31 deadline is available only to specified taxpayers filing ITR-3 or ITR-4 who have business or professional income and are not required to get their accounts audited.
Meanwhile, more than 5 crore income tax returns have been filed so far in the 2026-27 assessment year, the income tax department said on Wednesday. ITR-2 is filed by individuals and HUFs not having income from profits and gains in business or profession, but having income from capital gains.
