In March 2026, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation’s Central Board of Trustees (CBT) retained the rate of interest on EPF at 8.25% for the previous financial year. “After due deliberations, CBT recommended 8.25% annual rate of interest to be credited on EPF accumulations in members’ accounts for the financial year 2025-26,” said the press release dated March 2 from the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Nonetheless, as two months have already passed since then, several EPF members are looking for reasons for the delay in the interest payment.

When can you expect interest credit?

After the rates are announced by the provident fund body, the government also formally notifies it and subsequently EPFO credits the interest amount into your account.

However, the process is not as simple as it sounds. This is because after the formal notification by the EPFO, the government approval is awaited and then there is account reconciliation involved. The records of millions of subscribers are also updated. As all this takes time, there is no fixed date for credit.

The EPF interest payment generally takes place after the government gives its go-ahead to the CBT-recommended rates and notifies the same.

Based on the EPFO’s past interest payment timeline, investors and subscribers in the scheme may expect their interest for the previous financial year to be credited anywhere between June and September 2026. However, the same would depend on how quick is the government in issuing the final notification in its regard. Importantly, the entry in respect of interest being credited does not show in all EPF passbooks simultaneously.

So, even though a delay can be there in the interest payment, EPF subscribers actually receive full interest as per the eligibility without any loss due to the delayed payment.

How to check if EPF interest is credited into your account?

There are a number of ways using which you may confirm whether interest has been paid towards your account for a fiscal year or not, including UMANG app, EPFO portal, via missed call/ SMS etc.

EPF members should typically check for the last entry which in the case of interest credit would reflect like this- “Int. Updated up to 31/03/2026”.
