Declared EPF nominee online? Don’t miss this step as e-nomination is invalid without it

Employee Provident Fund (EPF) requires mandatory nomination as per EPF Scheme, 1952. Clear nomination makes the claim process smooth and hassle-free for nominees in a situation when the employee has passed away. Additionally, a valid nomination helps avoid any kind of dispute and legal problems among family members.

EPF nomination also ensures that the provident fund amount is disbursed as per the employee’s wish i.e. to the rightful nominee or the persons specified as beneficiaries under the EPF account.

As the nomination facility under EPF is also available online, the Employee Provident Fund Organisation ( EPFO) has reminded members time and again to not miss out e-Sign as e-nomination will not be valid without it.

“E-nominations that are only filed and pdf not e-signed will not be considered for action in the event of demise of the member. E-Nomination becomes complete only when the pdf is esigned,” says the EPF eNomination document.

For eSigning, go to the ‘e-nomination’ option under the Manage tab and click on E-sign link. After that a new page will be open, select the checkbox.

On the next page, member has two options for Aadhaar Based e-Authentication

1. Aadhaar number
2. Virtual ID

Enter Aadhaar number / Virtual id and press verify button.

After that an OTP will be sent to the member’s aadhaar-linked mobile number.

On entering the OTP and then pressing the submit button, nomination details will be saved in the database of EPFO.

Steps to generate 16-digit Aadhaar Virtual ID if the member wants to e-sign against the VID

Visit the UIDAI website at uidai.gov.in Click on ‘Virtual ID (VID) Generator’ listed under Aadhaar Services Enter 12 digit Aadhaar number of member. Enter Captcha To get the OTP, click on ‘Send OTP’ and enter the OTP received on member’s registered mobile number. It provides two options- to generate a new VID - retrieve the one you have already generated. Select one of the above options to receive the Aadhar Virtual ID[16- digit] on member’s mobile number.

Points to note: If a member has already generated a VID and again clicks generate VID , he should enter the latest generated VID and not the one that was generated earlier. If the member enters the old VID but has already generated another one VID, the message will come from UIDAI stating that the VID entered has expired.

Also, remember that e-nomination against EPF is available only for aadhaar-verified UAN holders and the facility can be accessed from the UAN-based login of the member.
