Now, claims for all three Jan Suraksha Schemes—PMSBY, PMJJBY and Atal Pension Yojana—will be verified at the Divisional Level.

The Department of Posts (DoP) recently issued detailed checklists for all post offices to ensure that claims related to Jan Suraksha Schemes (JSS) are complete before being sent to the Centralised Processing and Reconciliation Centre (CPRC).

In a release dated October 29, 2025, the DoP said that claims received from post offices often contain various omissions and are returned, resulting in delays in processing and settlement, as well as customer dissatisfaction.

“In order to ensure submission of claims without omissions and to avoid the delay in claim handling, it is decided that all the claim cases related to Jan Suraksha Schemes shall be submitted to the nodal office, viz., CPRC, Chennai, 600002, through the Divisional Head concerned,” the release said.

Now, claims for the three Jan Suraksha Schemes—Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY)—will be verified at the Divisional Level. The Divisional Heads will ensure that the claim applications are complete in all aspects, as per the checklists concerned, before forwarding them to the CRPC.

If you or your family members are covered under these schemes, here are the checklists that you need to follow to file claims correctly and avoid delays in processing/settlements:

PMSBY and PMJJBY

PMSBY is an accident insurance scheme offered by the central government, providing accidental death and disability cover of up to ₹2 lakh with an annual cost of just ₹20. Individuals aged 18 to 70 with a bank account are eligible for this scheme.

Meanwhile, PMJJBY is a one-year life insurance scheme offering ₹2 lakh death cover for individuals aged 18-50 at a premium of just ₹436 a year. The cause of death isn’t relevant for this scheme.

Checklists for PMBSBY and PMJJBY:
  • Claim form and discharge receipt filled in blue ink.
  • Claim entered in Finacle using CCSPMY menu.
  • Copies of the Death Certificate, FIR and postmortem report(for accidental deaths), disability certificate (if applicable) and Aadhaar of the deceased and the nominee.
  • Ledger copy showing PMSBY deduction, attested by Postmaster
  • Ledger copy of post office account (if nominee has one)
  • Cancelled cheque or passbook front page with name, IFSC and account number (if nominee has an account in another bank)
  • Names of the deceased and the nominee must match across all documents. If not, attach a Reconciliation Certificate or Indemnity Bond.
  • All documents must be counter-signed by the Postmaster, with the Postmaster’s stamp, in blue ink.
  • Submit two complete copies of the whole claim: two copies of every page must be submitted.
Note: Documents in local languages are to be translated into Hindi or English.

Importantly, for PMSBY, if the cause of death is accidents such as snake bite/fall from a tree, etc., hospital records mentioning the deceased member’s name, father’s/husband’s name, address and the date, time and cause of death will be required.

Atal Pension Yojana (APY)

APY is a retirement pension scheme for unorganised workers for individuals between 18 and 40 years of age, offering a guaranteed minimum monthly pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 after age 60.

Checklist:

  • Claim form duly filled in with all details
  • PRAN status in Finacle must show “death closure” after updating the date of death and the nominee details.
  • Copies of the Death Certificate and the Aadhaar of the deceased and the nominee.
  • Ledger copy showing APY deductions, attested by Postmaster.
  • Bank proof of nominee (cancelled cheque/passbook).
Note: Nominee’s account cannot be POSB/IPPB.
  • Names of the deceased and the nominee must match across all documents. If not, attach a Reconciliation Certificate or Indemnity Bond.
  • All documents must be counter-signed by the Postmaster, with the Postmaster’s stamp, in blue ink.
  • Only one copy of the claim is required.

Documents in regional/local languages must be translated into Hindi or English.

Special cases:
  • If the subscriber dies before 60 years, the spouse (registered nominee) gets the corpus.
  • If the claim is made by someone other than the registered nominee/spouse, a Legal Heir Certificate or Family Member Certificate issued by an Executive Magistrate will be required.

Post offices are now required to check all this and ensure that every document is verified and that all documents are properly entered in Finacle.

As beneficiaries, you must keep documents such as the policy slip, Aadhaar and passbook copies of both the member and the nominee, the Death Certificate, the FIR (if accidental), and hospital reports (if applicable) handy to ensure your claims are processed on time.

To avoid delays and to ensure you don’t miss any benefits, review these checklists carefully and gather all the relevant documents before submitting a claim.
