Petrol, diesel price hiked: How a ₹5 fuel price hike can add nearly ₹2,400 to your annual budget

SUMMARY

Petrol and diesel prices have risen nearly ₹5 per litre since May 15. Here’s how repeated fuel price hikes could add almost ₹2,400 annually to household budgets and impact everyday expenses.

Fuel prices have once again moved higher, with petrol and diesel rates rising for the third time in less than 10 days. While an increase of 87-91 paise per litre may appear modest in isolation, the cumulative impact is beginning to show up in household budgets. Since May 15, fuel prices have risen by nearly ₹5 per litre overall.

For everyday commuters, that adds up faster than expected. If you consume about 40 litres of petrol a month, common for many urban households, a ₹5 increase per litre translates into roughly ₹200 extra in monthly fuel expenses. Over a year, that adds up to nearly ₹2,400.

The impact, however, extends beyond just fuel bills. Higher petrol and diesel prices often ripple through the broader economy by increasing transportation and logistics costs, which can eventually make groceries, cab rides, food delivery and other daily essentials more expensive.

For salaried households already balancing EMIs, school fees and rising utility bills, recurring expenses such as fuel can gradually erode disposable income and reduce monthly savings capacity.

To put the increase in perspective, ₹2,400 annually could equal:
  • Two to three months of SIP contributions for a young investor.

  • Nearly one month of broadband and OTT bills

The latest increase comes as state-run oil companies continue passing on elevated global energy prices linked to tensions in West Asia.

Petrol and diesel prices were increased by up to 91 paise per litre on Saturday. In Delhi, petrol prices rose by 87 paise from ₹98.64 to ₹99.51 per litre, while diesel rates increased by 91 paise from ₹91.58 to ₹92.49.

This is the third increase since May 15, when oil companies began passing on higher energy costs arising from the West Asia conflict in a calibrated manner. Prices were first hiked by ₹3 per litre on May 15, followed by another 90-paise increase on May 19.

For consumers, the bigger concern is not a single revision, but the cumulative pressure of repeated fuel price hikes on monthly cash flow.
