In a recent exchange on the social media platform X, one user named GANESH Dadhich BJP, highlighted a common problem faced by many taxpayers: forgetting their PAN and not remembering the number. He sought assistance from Income Tax India and NSDL, asking how he could retrieve his PAN using his Aadhaar card.

Responding to the query, Income Tax India clarified the official process for PAN retrieval. The tax authority suggested that taxpayers should first contact the local jurisdictional Assessing Officer (AO), who can offer advice and help with identity verification, if they have misplaced or forgotten their PAN.
Alternatively, Income Tax India suggested a digital route for PAN retrieval. Taxpayers can email clear, colour-scanned copies of three key documents: date of birth proof, address proof, and Aadhaar to the designated email addresses adg1.systems@incometax.gov.in and jd.systems1.1@incometax.gov.in.

This method allows the tax department to verify the identity of the applicant remotely and provide the PAN details without the need for a physical visit, which can be especially convenient in the current era of digital governance.

This conversation highlights Aadhaar's growing integration with India's tax system and other government services. In addition to making retrieval easier, linking Aadhaar with PAN makes it easier to file income tax reports, keep track of financial transactions, and adhere to legal obligations.

To prevent future trouble, taxpayers are urged to store duplicates of their PAN and Aadhaar documents in a secure location. To ensure accuracy and security, those who are having trouble recovering their PAN should adhere to Income Tax India's established procedure.

Aadhaar-PAN linking deadline

The Government of India has extended the deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar to December 31, 2025, mainly for those whose PAN was issued based on an Aadhaar Enrolment ID filed before 1 October 2024.

After this date, unlinked PANs will become inoperative, affecting tax filing, refunds, and financial transactions. Linking can be done online, via SMS, or at service centres, and personal details must match to avoid errors. Missing the deadline may lead to penalties or higher TDS, so completing the linkage on time is essential.
