SUMMARY

With the new Aadhaar app, users can add and manage Aadhaar cards of up to five family members. However, the users must share a common registered mobile number.

Sharing a physical copy of Aadhaar, or a photocopy, may lead to its misuse by scammers.

In April 2025, the Government of India launched a new Aadhaar app to make Aadhaar more secure. The new app is different from the m-Aadhaar app launched in 2017, and it includes several advanced features, including a more secure digital identity management process.

While the app is yet to be launched formally, it can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. It can be used in everyday activities, such as checking into a hotel or going to an event that requires you to show Aadhaar.

With this app, users can digitally verify and share their Aadhaar details while hiding sensitive details, like full Aadhaar number, photograph, address, etc. This removes the need for you to carry a physical Aadhaar card or photocopies.

Recently, the UIDAI conducted a webinar on ‘Offline Verification using the Aadhaar App’ to encourage offline verification and spread awareness about its features and benefits. Read all about offline verification here.

Benefits of the new Aadhaar app

After downloading the app, you’ll first be asked for your Aadhaar number, followed by face authentication. You will also be asked to set a 6-digit numeric password.

Benefits of the app:
Adding multiple users: You can add and manage Aadhaar cards of up to five family members. However, the users must share a common registered mobile number.
Biometric lock: The biometric authentication feature lets you lock your data, ensuring that no one can access your information unless you allow it. You can set up face or fingerprint authentication to open the app.
Control: You can decide what information you want to share, like whether you want to share your photograph or not.
QR code: Aadhaar QR codes can be generated and scanned on the new app, making it easier for agencies to verify your identity quickly.
Activity: You can check your authentication history, which shows you when and where your data was accessed, and by which entity, like Protean or a bank.

The good part is that after the initial setup, you can view your Aadhaar details without an internet connection. This gives you offline access to the services.

“UIDAI authorities underlined multiple benefits for Aadhaar Number Holders like having Aadhaar details of up to five family members in the App; full control over what data of Aadhaar is shared; flexibility to disclose complete or selective Aadhaar information, one-click biometric lock/unlock for enhanced security and features like hassle-free mobile number and address update options,” the Ministry of Electronics & IT said in a release on November 19, while giving details about the webinar.

How is the new app different from mAadhaar app?

Through the mAadhaar app, you can:

  • Download official e-Aadhaar PDFs
  • Order physical Aadhaar cards
  • Create 16-digit temporary IDs for secure online transactions
  • Verifying or updating email and mobile number

While the new Aadhaar app is for showing ID in daily routine, to prove your identity when needed, the mAadhaar app can do much more. Both apps have their own purposes, which means you don’t need to opt for one and can use both.
