SUMMARY

EPFO wage ceiling has increased to ₹25,000. Here’s how the revised ceiling can take the EDLI calculation to ₹10.5 lakh while the payout remains capped at ₹7 lakh.

EPFO wage ceiling hike can take EDLI calculation to ₹10.5 lakh

According to the EPFO’s FAQs, the mathematical calculation can reach ₹10.5 lakh, but the maximum assurance benefit presently payable under EDLI remains capped at ₹7 lakh.

The Union Cabinet on September 16 approved an increase in the EPFO wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. The Ministry of Labour and Employment notified the revised ceiling the next day through Gazette notification S.O. 5109(E), with the new limit effective from September 17, 2026.

The increase has also raised a question around the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) benefit: can the maximum insurance payout now go up to ₹10.5 lakh?

According to the EPFO’s FAQs, the mathematical calculation can reach ₹10.5 lakh, but the maximum assurance benefit presently payable under EDLI remains capped at ₹7 lakh.

How does the ₹10.5 lakh calculation work?

The EPFO FAQ gives an example using an average monthly wage of ₹25,000.

Under the calculation:
  • Average monthly wage: ₹25,000

  • 35 times the average monthly wage: ₹8.75 lakh

  • 50% of the average PF balance: up to ₹1.75 lakh

  • Total mathematical calculation: ₹10.50 lakh

So, the ₹10.5 lakh figure comes from adding the two components of the calculation.

Why is the maximum payout still ₹7 lakh?

This is where the distinction between the calculation and the actual assurance benefit becomes important.

The EPFO FAQ states that the increase in the wage ceiling can increase the wage-linked component used to calculate the EDLI benefit. However, it also specifically says that the maximum assurance benefit presently payable under the EDLI Scheme 2026 remains ₹7 lakh.

Therefore, a calculation of ₹10.5 lakh does not mean that the nominee will currently receive ₹10.5 lakh.

The maximum assurance benefit remains ₹7 lakh under the present scheme.

Could the EDLI benefit change later?

The EPFO has said that an actuarial valuation of the EDLI fund will be undertaken. Based on the analysis, the benefits may be decided in the future.

For now, however, the ₹7 lakh maximum assurance benefit continues to apply.

What has the wage ceiling changed?

The statutory wage ceiling for mandatory EPFO coverage has increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month. The government has said the revision is expected to bring more than 51 lakh additional employees under mandatory EPFO coverage.

The revised ceiling covers the statutory framework for EPF, EPS and EDLI, subject to the applicable provisions.

For EDLI specifically, the key point is that the higher ₹25,000 wage ceiling can result in a ₹10.5 lakh mathematical calculation, but the maximum assurance benefit currently payable remains ₹7 lakh.

What is EDLI?

EDLI, or Employees’ Deposit-Linked Insurance, is a life insurance scheme managed by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). Employees who contribute to EPF are enrolled in EDLI by default. The employee does not have to pay a separate premium for this insurance cover, as the monthly contribution is made by the employer.
