How the wage ceiling under EPFO has increased over the years.

The Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) wage ceiling has undergone several revisions since the EPF Scheme was introduced in 1952.

According to the historical wage-limit data compiled by TaxGuru, it started at ₹300 per month on 1 November 1952 and was subsequently revised to ₹500 in June 1957, ₹1,000 in December 1962, and ₹1,600 in December 1976. The ceiling was further raised to ₹2,500 in September 1985, ₹3,500 in November 1990, and ₹5,000 in October 1994. In June 2001, the wage limit was increased to ₹6,500, followed by a major revision to ₹15,000 in September 2014

The latest revision increases the EPF wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month in 2026 with effect from September 17.

The EPF wage ceiling has increased from ₹300 per month in 1952 to ₹25,000 per month in 2026.This represents an increase of ₹24,700.

Percentage increase: (₹25,000 - ₹300) ÷ ₹300 x 100 = 8,233.33%

In other words, the EPF wage ceiling in 2026 is approximately 83.33 times the ceiling applicable in 1952. If we talk about in terms of percentage it has increased by 8,233%.
