SSY account interest vs FD

At present, the SSY account is offering 8.2% interest per annum, compounded annually. This is better than the fixed deposit interest rates offered by most banks, including State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, and others.

The SSY account can be opened by a guardian in the name of a girl who has not yet turned 10-years-old as of the date of opening the account. There can be a maximum of two SSY accounts in the name of two girls in a family.

In case of twins and triplets, however, more than two accounts in a family are allowed after submitting an affidavit. The guardian is required to operate the SSY account until the girl child reaches the age of 18. After that, the accountholder can take control of the account by submitting the required documents.
