The latest price environment comes as jewellery buyers remain cautious about making discretionary purchases.

In its report, India Gold Market Update, Cautious Festive Optimism, dated September 17, the World Gold Council (WGC) said consumers were holding back discretionary purchases after a sharp rally and subsequent pullback in gold prices over the previous two months.

The report, authored by Kavita Chacko, Research Head for India at the WGC, described the mood in the gold market as one of “cautious festive optimism.”

According to the WGC report, high gold prices have made jewellery buyers more cautious, with industry feedback indicating that consumers have moved into a “wait-and-watch mode”, particularly for discretionary purchases.

Retailers are also being cautious about building inventory and are replenishing stocks based on actual demand. Some manufacturers have reported delays in retailers taking up orders, the report said.

The report also points to a shift towards lighter-weight jewellery, allowing buyers to manage the impact of high gold prices while continuing with wedding and festive purchases.
