Why are gold and silver prices volatile?

Gold and silver have seen considerable price swings in recent sessions. According to the World Gold Council's Weekly Markets Monitor dated November 2, changing expectations around the US Federal Reserve's interest-rate outlook and selling by leveraged investors contributed to the weakness. Silver has faced greater pressure.

The US dollar, bond yields, interest-rate expectations and geopolitical developments will remain important factors influencing precious metal prices.

India's gold demand falls 29% in July-September quarter

India's gold demand declined 29% year-on-year to 162.5 tonnes in the July-September quarter of 2026, compared with 229.8 tonnes in the corresponding period last year, according to the World Gold Council's Q3 2026 Gold Demand Trends report released on November 3.

The decline came amid higher gold prices, increased import duty and changing consumer buying patterns. However, the value of gold demand increased 3% to ₹2,41,900 crore from ₹2,35,090 crore a year earlier.

Jewellery demand fell 20% to 99.9 tonnes, while demand for gold bars and coins dropped 40% to 55 tonnes. Gold ETF demand also declined 50% to 5.3 tonnes.

The upcoming festive and wedding season could provide support, although elevated prices may encourage consumers to opt for lighter jewellery and exchange-led purchases.
