Gold rates in Delhi on November 4; indicative, before making charges and GST

Buyers have until Friday, November 6, Dhanteras, and Sunday, November 8, Diwali, to finish their purchases, and shopkeepers in the city expect queues from Thursday morning.

The fortnight has been choppy for gold rates. Delhi's 24 karat rate lost ₹5,060 per 10 grams, or 3.51%, in a single session on October 31, and Wednesday's ₹270 gain has clawed back only a fraction. However, against October's peak of ₹1,51,570, gold is still about ₹12,000 per 10 grams cheaper, a gap of nearly 8%.

Dealers attribute the slide to profit-booking after a record run and a firmer dollar overseas. MCX December gold settled at ₹1,39,452 per 10 grams on Tuesday, and spot gold edged higher in early Asian trade on Wednesday as the dollar softened. Most read the pre-Dhanteras bump as restocking rather than a new rally.

Please note that the rates above are indicative. A showroom's price can differ depending on the zone, the store and local supply. So buyers should compare rates at several shops themselves instead of accepting the first figure offered. The final payment is also usually higher than the karat-based price, because making charges and 3% GST are added. For instance, a 10-gram 22 karat gold piece with 8% making charges attracts GST of ₹4,152, taking the total to about ₹1,42,565.

Making charges, which may run from 6 to 18%, deserve as much comparison as the rate itself. Buyers should also ensure the jewellery carries a BIS hallmark and a six-digit HUID, and that the bill shows weight, purity, making charges and GST separately.
