Dhanteras falls on Friday, November 6, and Diwali on Sunday, November 8, and Bowbazar's bullion lane, showrooms along Camac Street and other markets are already reporting heavier enquiries.

Wednesday's session added ₹270 per 10 grams to 24 karat and ₹250 to 22 karat, recovering a small part of the 3.51% slide on October 31. Gold is still about ₹12,000 per 10 grams below October's peak of ₹1,51,570, which dealers say has brought back buyers who held off during the rally.

Kolkata's preference runs to lightweight, design-heavy jewellery, so 18 and 22 karat do most of the volume, with 24 karat reserved for coins and gifting.

Bengali bridal sets in 22 karat remain the biggest single purchase category. Buyers here increasingly ask for the making charge as a rupee figure per gram rather than a percentage, a habit that makes cross-shop comparison far easier.

The rates are indicative and a particular store may quote differently. So buyers should compare rates at more than one jeweller on their own. The final bill will also be higher than the karat-based price because making charges and 3% GST are added.

Before buying, one should compare making charges store to store, ask about exchange terms if you plan to trade in old gold, and confirm a BIS hallmark with a six-digit HUID on every piece.
