US markets today: Equity futures on Wall Street were indicating a gap-up opening on Tuesday, August 4, as investors focused on the upcoming Q2 tech earnings, lower crude oil prices, and positive momentum from the Asian markets.

Dow Jones futures were trading 1.2% higher at 53,975 points ahead of the opening bell on Tuesday, August 4, indicating a nearly 800-point higher open when compared to the previous US market close.

The S&P 500 index futures were trading 0.31% higher at 7,652 points ahead of the market open, indicating an over 50-point higher opening on Tuesday’s Wall Street session, as per Investing.com data.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 futures were trading 1.06% higher at 29,196.75 points, indicating a more than 400-point higher opening on Tuesday’s market session, when compared to the previous US stock market close.

US markets recap

The US equity market indices rallied to close at an elevated level after Monday’s trading session as investors focused on the 6% decline in global crude oil prices, cooling bond yields, and a tech stocks rally.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 1.32% higher at 53,178.41 points after the trading session on Monday, compared to 52,485.03 points at the previous US market close, according to MarketWatch data.

The S&P 500 index closed 1.48% higher at 7,600.50 points after Monday’s market session, compared to 7,489.72 points at the previous equity market close, as per the exchange data.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 index surged to close 1.78% higher at 28,776.80 points after the trading session on August 3, compared to 28,272.20 points at the previous stock market close.

US stocks to watch on August 4

SpaceX: Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) shares were trading 1.8% higher ahead of the US stock market open on Tuesday, as investors awaited the company’s Q2 earnings report, which is expected to be released during post-market hours on Wall Street.
AMD: Tech major, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) shares rallied more than 4% during the pre-market hours on Nasdaq ahead of the opening bell on Tuesday. The company is set to release its June quarter results during post-market hours on August 4.
Pfizer: Pharma major Pfizer shares were trading lower during the pre-market hours on NYSE ahead of the opening bell, as investors focused on the upcoming Q2 earnings data release.
BP: BP shares were trading nearly 2% lower ahead of the opening bell on Tuesday, as investors awaited the June quarter results during the market hours on August 4.
Key earnings stocks: Other stocks like Caterpillar Inc., Merck & Company, Amgen, McDonald’s Corp., Spotify Technology, Cummins, and American Financial Group are among other companies which are set to announce their April to June quarter results on August 4.
Tech stocks: Tech stocks like SK Hynix ADR, Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD, Qualcomm, Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC), Texas Instruments, ASML Holdings, and Oracle are set to be in focus on August 4, amid tech earnings which are set to be released on Tuesday.

Crude oil drops under $80/barrel

Crude oil prices dropped under $80 per barrel during Tuesday’s market session, declining 4.8% on August 4, as investors focused on reports of a draft potential agreement “being circulated” amid no direct talks.

Investing.com data suggests that global benchmark Brent crude oil prices were trading 4.5% lower at $79.92 per bbl during Tuesday’s market session, compared to $83.77 per bbl at the previous commodity market close.

Although crude oil prices have risen 11% in one month, the energy rates have declined 5% in the last five trading sessions in the global market.
