Dow Jones futures were trading 0.08% lower at 53,306 points ahead of the opening bell on Monday, indicating a marginally higher opening in comparison to the previous Wall Street close, according to Investing.com.

The exchange data also showed that the S&P 500 index futures were trading 0.19% lower at 7,677 points ahead of the opening bell on August 24, indicating a flat open on Monday’s market.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 futures declined 0.60% to 29,210 points lower ahead of the trading session on Monday, indicating a more than 90-point lower opening when compared to the previous US equity market close levels.

Key things to watch before US market opens

Key economic releases this week

Equity market investors are set to focus on key economic data releases like the PCE Price Index data, Consumer Spending data, second GDP estimates, and others this week, as per the economic calendar.

The US Bureau of Economic Analysis is set to release the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) data for the month of July 2026. The department will also release the second GDP growth estimate for the US economy on Wednesday, August 26, this week.

The US Census Bureau, along with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, is set to release the new home sales data for the US economy at around 10 am (ET) in the United States.

Investors will also focus on the upcoming Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium 2026 event, which is set to be held later this week.

US stocks to watch on August 24

Alibaba: Alibaba Group Holding ADR shares declined more than 2% during the pre-market hours on Monday, as investors focused on the company’s $10.2 billion plan to issue shares to non-US investors and aims to use the funds raised towards artificial intelligence (AI) projects.
SanDisk Corp.: SanDisk Corporation shares lost 5% during the pre-market hours on Nasdaq ahead of the opening bell as investors focused on the overall hardware and memory stocks trading in the red zone amid negative cues from Asian markets.
Marvell Technology: Marvell Technology share price was trading around 3% lower during the pre-market session ahead of the opening bell on August 24, as investors focused on the decline in tech stocks and subdued momentum from the Asian indices.
Other tech stocks: AI chipmaking and tech stocks like AMD, Intel, Western Digital, Seagate Tech, Micron Technologies, Nvidia, among others were in focus on Friday’s market hours.
Steel stocks: Steel manufacturing stocks like Nucor, Steel Dynamics, among others surged during the trading session on August 21, after the trade negotiations failed between the United States and Canada.

Reports suggest that Canada is set to target the US steel industry with its retaliatory tariffs, which are expected to start from Sptember 8, 2026.

US markets recap

The US equity market indices ended with modest gains after the trading session on Friday, August 21, as investors focused on the rebound after Thursday’s selloff, strong retail earnings, and the US Treasury’s buyback plan.

MarketWatch data showed that the Dow Jones Industrial Average index ended 0.98% higher at 53,277.01 points after the trading session on Friday last week, in comparison to 52,759.21 points at the previous equity market close.

The S&P 500 index closed 0.43% higher at 7,674.37 points after the trading session on August 21, compared to 7,641.16 points at the previous Wall Street close, as per the exchange data.

The Nasdaq 100 index closed 0.33% higher at 29,308.86 points after the trading session on Friday, in comparison to 29,213.16 points at the previous US equity market close.

Crude oil prices

Crude oil futures prices declined 2.5% to near $90 per barrel (bbl) during the trading session on Monday, August 24, as commodity market investors booked their profits ahead of the upcoming US government economic campaign announcement against Iran amid the West Asia conflict.

Investing.com data showed that Brent crude oil prices were trading 1.4% lower at $91.37 per bbl during Monday’s trading session, in contrast to $92.67 per bbl at the previous equity market close.

Latest report suggests that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to reveal America’s plan to impose economic sanctions later during the day on Iran, amid no signs of a peace agreement.
