US equity market futures indicate a mixed opening on Tuesday, September 15, as investors focused on the US Federal Reserve set to begin its key monetary policy meeting later during the day to determine the interest rates for the economy amid elevated Treasury yields and high energy prices in the market.

Dow Jones futures were trading 0.30% lower at 52,705 points ahead of the opening bell on Tuesday’s market, indicating a more than 280-point lower open in comparison to the previous US equity market close, as per MarketWatch data.

The exchange data also showed that the S&P 500 index futures were trading 0.17% lower at 7,679 points ahead of the market open on September 15, indicating a 60-point lower opening.

The Nasdaq 100 futures were trading 0.11% lower at 29,418 points ahead of the market opening, however indicating a potentially 290-point higher open when compared to the previous Wall Street close with recovery potential after Monday’s selloff.

Dave & Buster’s Entertainment: Dave & Buster’s Entertainment shares declined more than 13% during the pre-market hours on Nasdaq as investors reacted to company’s disappointing second quarter results which missed the Wall Street estimates.
Enova International: Enova International shares lost more than 17% during the pre-market hours on NYSE as the online credit services provider said the company is withdrawing its regulatory applications for the proposed acquisition of Grasshopper Bancorp.
Sysco: Shares of Sysco declined 2% during the pre-market trading session on September 15, as investors were reacting to the wholesale distributor announcing a common stock offering of 12.3 million equity shares priced at $81 per share.
Etsy: Etsy shares have risen more than 3% during the pre-market hours on Wall Street ahead of Tuesday’s opening bell as US-based investment firm, Oppenheimer Holdings upgraded their ratings on the company indicating potential boost from artificial intelligence from virtual shopping.
Tech stocks: Technology and chipmaking stocks like Nvidia, Micron Technology, Alphabet, Intel, Broadcom, and AMD among others will remain in focus of investors during the trading session on Tuesday after a tech selloff for any potential bounceback cues.

US Fed’s meeting in focus

The US Federal Reserve is set to begin its two-day key monetary policy meeting on Tuesday, September 15, and end on Wednesday, September 16, after which the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will announce its outcome at 2 pm (ET) in the United States.

The Federal Open Market Committee is set to determine the key benchmark interest rates for the US economy. Market experts predict there is a high chance of a potential rate hike in this upcoming meeting outcome.

Asian markets end in red

The Asian market indices ended lower after their trading session on Tuesday, September 15, as investors focused on the AI-selloff cues from Wall Street combined with higher oil prices and elevated US treasury yields.

MarketWatch data showed that Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed 0.01% lower, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng ended 1% lower, China’s Shanghai Composite lost 0.54%, India’s SENSEX ended 1.04%, South Korea’s KOSPI lost 0.85%, and Singapore’s FTSE lost 1.39% on Tuesday’s market.

Crude oil trades at $108/barrel

Global crude oil prices surged 2.6% to touch an intraday high of $108.43 per barrel (bbl) during the trading session on Tuesday, September 15, as investors focused on the elevated tensions and re-escalations between the United States and Iran.

Investing.com data showed that benchmark Brent crude oil prices were trading 0.11% higher at $105.81 per bbl as of 5:08 pm (IST) on Tuesday’s market, as compared to $105.68 per bbl at the previous commodity market close.

The exchange data also showed that the crude oil prices have risen 8.3% in the last five trading sessions, nearly 20% in the last one-month, and more than 28% in the past three months.

Latest reports from CNN citing local media showed that the Iranian commercial vessel was reportedly struck at the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, an attack which killed one person amid the ongoing conflict.

The US Central Command in an official statement said that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ claims of a Panama-flagged oil tanker recently being struck by a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz is false.

This incident was of Panama-flagged oil tanker El Gaia was struck by an Iranian missile last month and rendered inoperable.

“This weekend, Iran struck the tanker again with a drone while the ship sat in waters of the coast of Oman,” said US CENTCOM in their last statement.

How did US markets close on Monday?

The US equity market indices ended lower after their trading session on Monday, September 14, after witnessing a massive sell-off pressure from investors due to the concerns flagged by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei calling out the slower pace of AI development, citing increasing safety risk concerns in the market.

MarketWatch data showed that the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 0.29% lower at 52,421.20 points after the trading session on Monday, in comparison to 52,573.29 points at the previous equity market close.

The exchange data showed that the S&P 500 index closed 0.48% lower at 7,619.98 points after the trading session on September 14, compared to 7,656.98 points at the previous US equity market close.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 index ended 0.82% lower at 29,127.16 points after the trading session on Monday’s market, in comparison to 29,368.44 points at the previous Wall Street close.

Investors were also focused on the US Treasury yields touching a record high of 5% during the trading session on Monday.
