At 10:10 AM, Vodafone Idea shares were trading at ₹8.95 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, rising 2.52%.
According to media reports, the top court had clarified that the government is free to consider granting relief on both the additional AGR dues and the reassessment of existing dues.
However, the investment will go through only if the government offers a full relief package covering Vodafone Idea’s dues, including AGR and spectrum payments, the report suggested.
The report further stated that the New York-based investment firm is not seeking a complete waiver of dues but a restructuring of liabilities to give the company some relief. It has also submitted a detailed proposal to the government.
The potential relief would apply only to the ₹9,450-crore additional demand raised for the period up to FY17, in line with the Supreme Court’s October 27 ruling that allowed a reassessment of discrepancies in the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) demand calculations, the report said.
Last week, the Supreme Court permitted the Centre to reconsider and reconcile Vodafone Idea's pending AGR dues of ₹5,606 crore for FY17, observing that the issue falls within the policy domain of the government.
In a regulatory filing, Vi said, “In a positive development, the Hon'ble Supreme Court has today permitted the Government to consider the grievances of Vodafone Idea Limited on the issues relating to AGR. We look forward to working closely with the Department of Telecommunications to resolve this matter in the interests of our nearly 200 million subscribers.”
Vodafone Idea had sought a direction from the DoT to “comprehensively reassess and reconcile all AGR dues for the period up to FY 2016-17 following the 'Deduction Verification Guidelines'” dated February 3, 2020.
Adjusted gross revenue (AGR) is the income figure used to calculate the licence fees and spectrum charges that telecom companies must pay to the government.
Earlier this year, in a setback to telecom majors, including Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, the apex court refused to review its 2021 order rejecting their pleas for rectification of alleged errors in the calculation of AGR dues payable by them.
In September 2020, the top court fixed a time frame of 10 years for telecom service providers struggling to pay ₹93,520 crore of AGR-related dues to clear their outstanding amount to the government.
Vodafone Idea owes nearly ₹83,400 crore in AGR dues, and the annual payments currently stand at ₹18,000 crore, scheduled from March 2026. When combined with interest and penalties, Vodafone Idea’s dues stand at more than ₹2 lakh crore.
As per the report, one of the relief options is an additional two-year pause on paying the statutory dues under moratorium at present. The DoT has proposed to give the company extra time to pay its dues, along with smaller annual payouts and a waiver on penalties and interest penalties on AGR payment, the report said.
At 3:20 PM, the stock was trading at ₹9.52 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, rising 9.05%.
In the last five trading sessions, Vodafone Idea shares have tanked over 12%, while for six months’ time, they have gained 23%. The shares have climbed 10% since the beginning of the year.
Shares of the firm had touched their one-year high of ₹10.57 apiece on October 27, 2025, while their 52-week low of ₹6.12 was hit on August 14, 2025.
