The Indian equity benchmarks snapped their two-day losing streak on Thursday, May 29, led by gains in index heavyweights like Infosys, Reliance Industries, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, Sun Pharma, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Eternal. For most part of the day, the SENSEX and NIFTY traded in a narrow range owing to monthly expiry of May futures and option contracts. The SENSEX ended 0.39% or 321 points higher at 81,633 and NIFTY50 index rose 81 points or 0.33% to close at 24,834.
IndusInd Bank was top gainer in the NIFTY50 index, the stock rose 2.47% to close at ₹825 after SEBI on Wednesday barred former CEO Sumant Kathpalia and four other senior officials from accessing the securities markets in connection with an alleged insider trading in the bank's shares, as investors chose to look ahead after multiple irregularities surfaced in the past three months.
The lender, in its March quarter earnings, had assured that there would be no more setbacks at the bank.
Sun Pharma (1.99%), Eternal (1.79%), Adani Ports (1.74%) and Trent (1.65%) were also among the gainers.
On the flipside, HDFC Life was top loser in the NIFTY50 basket of shares, the stock fell 1.07% to close at ₹781. Bharat Electronics (-0.81%), Tata Consumer Products (-0.68%), Jio Financial Services (-0.67%) and Bajaj Finance (-0.62%) were also among the laggards.
NIFTY Midcap 100 index rose 0.55% or 316 points to close at 57,457. As many as 69 shares in the NIFTY Midcap 100 index ended higher while 31 closed lower.
Waaree Energies was top gainer in the NIFTY Midcap 100 index, the stock rose 8.36% to close at ₹3,030.90 after its arm Waaree Solar Americas, received an order on May 28, 2025, for the supply of 586 MW solar modules for an amount of $176 million from a renowned customer who is a developer and owner-operator of utility-scale solar and energy storage projects across the United States. The supply of modules is scheduled to commence from the Financial Year 2026-27.
Cummins India rose 6.52% to close at ₹447 after the company’s revenue increased 6.1% year-on-year (YoY) to ₹2,457 crore for the quarter ending March 31 from ₹2,457 crore in the same period last fiscal year.
However, the company has reported a decline of 7.2% in its standalone net profit for the reporting quarter at ₹521.37 crore as against ₹561.52 crore in Q4 FY24.
During the fourth quarter, Cummins’ earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) slipped 4.5% YoY to ₹519.9 crore from ₹544.27 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year. Its margin for Q4 FY25 shrank 21.16% from 23.50% YoY.
Oil India (3.93%), Prestige Estates (3.86%) and Bharat Dynamics (3.39%) were also among the gainers.
On the other hand, NTPC Green was top loser in the NIFTY Midcap 100 index, the stock fell 3.21% to close at ₹112.90. Apollo Tyres (-3.05%), Escorts (-1.93%), MRF (-1.45%) and Astral (-1.42%) were also among the laggards.
NIFTY Smallcap 100 index advanced 0.59% or 105 points to close at 17,889.40. As many as 49 shares in the index ended higher while 50 closed lower.
Welspun Corp was top gainer in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index, the stock rose 9.75% to settle at ₹893 after it reported a 160.1% year-over-year (YoY) growth in its consolidated net profit to ₹698.31 crore in the March FY25 quarter, compared to ₹268.48 crore in the same period last year. A reduction in expenses aided the profit.
Sequentially, the net profit was 3.49% higher compared to ₹674.70 crore in the December FY25 quarter.
However, Welspun saw a 12.02% YoY decline in its revenue from operations to ₹3,924.97 crore in the quarter under review, as against ₹4,461.17 crore in Q4FY25.
Garden Reach Shipbuilders (8%), ITI (7.16%), Castrol India (5.79%) and Anant Raj (5.59%) were also among the gainers.
On the contrary, Newgen Software Technologies was top loser in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index, the stock fell 2.34% to close at ₹1,216.80. Aadhaar Housing Finance (-2.23%), Devyani International (-1.70%), BLS (-1.60%) and Trident (-1.54%) were also among the losers.
