The Indian equity benchmarks declined for a second straight session on Wednesday, January 7. The 30-share SENSEX fell as much as 446 points and NIFTY50 index touched an intraday low of 26,068 dragged down by losses in index heavyweights like HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Bharti Airtel, State Bank of India, Mahindra & Mahindra and Reliance Industries.

The benchmarks, however, staged a recovery in noon deals on the back of buying interest in ICICI Bank, Infosys, Titan, TCS and HCL Technologies.

The SENSEX ended 102 points lower at 84,961 and NIFTY50 index closed 38 points lower at 26,141.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

Cipla was top loser in the NIFTY50 index, the stock dropped 4.28% to close at ₹1,465 amid news reports that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released details of its observations on the company's Pharmathen International.

Cipla has partnered with Greece-based contract manufacturing organisation Pharmathen to commercialise the cancer drug Lanreotide in the US market, and the regulatory action has impacted investor sentiment.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as reported by CNBC-TV18, the observations highlight several compliance gaps at Pharmathen’s facilities. These include inadequate procedures to prevent contamination and weak control systems to maintain sterile conditions.

Maruti Suzuki (-2.81%), Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (-1.6%), Power Grid (-1.6%) and Max Healthcare (-1.59%) were also among the losers.

On the flipside, Titan was top gainer in the NIFTY50 index, the stock advanced 3.94% to close at record high of ₹4,273.90 after the precious metal company reported robust updates for the third quarter of the 2025-26 financial year (Q3FY26).

The company’s jewellery portfolio logged a robust 41% year-on-year (YoY) growth for the December quarter of FY26, bolstered by a vibrant festive demand, it said in a regulatory filing.

Furthermore, its revenue growth was driven by a substantial rise in the average selling price (ASP), which offset flatish buyer growth.

To navigate the elevated gold price environment, Tanishq deployed a “powerful” gold exchange offer that substantiated consumer engagement beyond the traditional festive window.

HCL Technologies (2.36%), Wipro (1.79%), Tech Mahindra (1.76%) and Jio Financial Services (1.73%) were also among the gainers.

NIFTY Midcap 100 top gainers and losers

NIFTY Midcap 100 index outperformed its larger peer as the index advanced 0.45% or 276 points to close at 61,425. As many as 58 shares ended higher while 42 closed lower.

Tata Elxsi was top gainer in the NIFTY Midcap 100 index, the stock climbed 9.47% to close at ₹5,851 amid higer than usual trading volumes. Trading volume in the stock jumped by 29 times to 28.93 lakh shares against an average trading volume of 99,566 shares.

KPIT Technologies (6.15%), Tata Technologies (5.27%), Persistent Systems (4.36%) and Hitachi Energy (4.21%) were also among the gainers.

On the other hand, M&M Financial Services (-3.35%), Prestige Estates (-2.16%), SBI Cards (-2.01%), Jubilant FoodWorks (-1.92%) and L&T Finance (-1.83%) were top losers in the NIFTY Midcap 100 index.

NIFTY Smallcap 100 top gainers and losers

NIFTY Smallcap 100 index advanced 0.39% or 71 points to close at 17,958. As many as 52 shares ended higher while 48 closed lower.

Neuland Labs was top gainer in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index, the stock advanced 4.34% to close at ₹15,139. Manappuram Finance (3.97%), Tata Chemicals (3.85%), Indian Energy Exchange (3.28%) and Wockhardt Pharma (3.09%) were also among the gainers.

On the contrary, Ola Electric (-3.4%), Hindustan Copper (-2.52%), Zen Technologies (-2.46%), Cholamandalam Financial Holdings (-2.38%) and Jyoti CNC (-2.13%) were top losers in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index.
