SUMMARY
Markets ended on a mixed note as gains in L&T, Infosys, M&M, Eternal and Reliance Industries were offset with losses in ITC, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, Asian Paints and Bharat Electronics.

The Indian equity benchmarks ended Thursday's rangebound session on a mixed note as gains in Larsen & Toubro, Infosys, Mahindra & Mahindra, Eternal and Reliance Industries were offset with losses in ITC, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, Asian Paints and Bharat Electronics. The SENSEX traded in a band of 350 points and NIFTY50 index touched an intraday high of 26,197.55 and low of 26,113.40.
The SENSEX ended 32 points lower at 85,189 and NIFTY50 index advanced 17 points to close at 26,147,
Bajaj Auto was top gainer in the NIFTY50 index, the stock rose 2.59% to close at ₹9,585. Shriram Finance (2.39%), NTPC (1.99%), Eternal (1.98%) and Wipro (1.52%) were also among the gainers.
On the flipside, ITC was top loser in the NIFTY50 index, the stock dropped nearly 10% after the government notified February 1 as the date from which additional excise duty will be levied on tobacco products and a new cess on pan masala.
Shares of the company were under pressure as investors fear that the additional levy will lead to a significant increase in tobacco product prices, thereby adversely affecting related companies.
The new levies on tobacco and pan masala will be in addition to the GST rate and will replace the compensation cess currently levied on these sin goods.
Tata Consumer Products (-1.57%), Dr Reddy's Labs (-1.57%) and Bajaj Finance (-1.13%) were also among the laggards.
NIFTY Midcap 100 index rose 0.44% or 266 points to close at 60,750. As many as 57 shares ended higher while 43 closed lower.
Vodafone Idea was top gainer in the NIFTY Midcap 100 index, the stock rose 8.09% to close at ₹11.63 as the company will receive around ₹5,836 crore from Vodafone Group as part of the resettlement of a liability claim pact between the two companies, according to regulatory filings of both companies.
Adani total Gas (4.29%), Indus Towers (3.88%), Supreme Industries (3.76%) and Astral (3.42%) were also among the gainers.
On the other hand, Godfrey Phillips dropped 17% to ₹2,288 mirroring losses in other tobacco related shares.
Mankind Pharma (-1.45%), Motilal Oswal (-1.43%), Biocon (-1.43%) and Indraprastha Gas (-1.37%) were also among the losers.
NIFTY Smallcap 100 index 9 points lower at 17,705. As many as 55 shares ended lower while 45 closed higher.
Ola Electric was top gainer in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index, the stock rose 3.89% after the company increased its market share M-o-M to 9.3% in December over 7.2% in November 2025.
Cholamandalam Financial Holdings (3.64%), PNB Housing Finance (3.64%), PNB Housing Finance (3.47%) and Narayana Hrudayalaya (2.06%) were also among the gainers.
On the contrary, Deepak Fertilisers (-3.27%), Gillette (-1.94%), Welspun Corp (-1.83%), Kaynes Technology India (-1.78%) and Five-Star Business Finance (-1.71%) were top losers in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index.
