The Indian equity benchmarks came under heavy selling pressure on Tuesday, April 1, a day ahead of announcement of reciprocal tariffs by the US President Donald Trump. The SENSEX fell as much as 1,502.74 points at the day's lowest level and NIFTY50 index touched an intraday low of 23,136.40. Index heavyweights such as HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Infosys, Reliance Industries, HCL Technologies and Bajaj Finance were among the top drags on the SENSEX, they collectively wiped out over 900 points from the SENSEX, data from the BSE showed. The SENSEX ended 1,390.41 points or 1.80% lower at 76,024.51 and NIFTY50 index dropped 353.65 points or 1.50% to close at 23,165.70.
HCL Technologies was top loser in the NIFTY50 basket of shares, the stock fell 3.64% to close at ₹1,534.50. The stock reflected weak trend in the information technology space a day ahead of announcement of reciprocal tariffs by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, April 2. Analysts say IT companies, which earn significant revenue from the United States, will get directly impacted if Trump announces any adverse tariff measure on the IT sector.
Bharat Electronics (-3.47%), Bajaj Finserv (-3.26%), HDFC Bank (-3.19%) and Hindalco (-2.78%) were also among the losers.
On the flipside, IndusInd Bank was top gainer in the NIFTY50 basket of shares, the stock rose 5.06% to close at ₹682.70. Trent jumped 4.56$ to close at ₹5,568 after the company informed exchanges that the company has crossed an operating portfolio of over 1,000 large-box fashion stores (including 248 Westside and 757 Zudio stores).
A big-box or large-box store is a physically large retail establishment, usually part of a chain of stores.
The Westside and Zudio brands have to date served over 100 million customers across 230 cities, it added.
Jio Financial Services (1.51%), Bajaj Auto (1.22%) and Hero MotoCorp (1.18%) were also among the gainers.
NIFTY Midcap 100 index ended 0.86% or 442.65 points lower at 51,229.60 on Tuesday. As many as 70 shares in the index ended lower while 30 ended higher. Vodafone Idea was top gainer in the NIFTY Midcap 100 basket of shares, the stock jumped 20.15% to close at ₹8.17 after the company informed exchanges that government's stake in the company more than double to 48.99% as it is set to acquire shares worth ₹36,950 crore in place of outstanding spectrum auction dues.
The government is already the single-largest shareholder in the battered company with a 22.6% stake, and the fresh move will take its total holding to more than the combined stake of the company's promoter firms – Vodafone and Aditya Birla Group.
Indus Towers rose 5.37% to close at ₹352.25 following the development in Vodafone Idea.
IDFC First Bank (4.08%), HUDCO (3.55%) and Bank of India (3.16%) were also among the gainers.
On the flipside, Voltas was top NIFTY Midcap 100 loser, the stock fell 7.56% to settle at 1,348.40. Persistent Systems (-5%), PB Fintech (-4.70%), Coforge (-4.18%) and Oberoi Realty (-3.94%) were also among the losers.
NIFTY Smallcap 100 index declined 0.70% to close at 15,982.95. As many as 55 shares in the index ended lower while 45 closed higher in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index.
Atul Ltd. was top loser in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index, the stock fell 5.49% to close at ₹5,800. Neuland Laboratories (-5.19%), Amber Enterprises (-4.80%), Redington India (-4.71%) and Triveni Turbine (-4.60%) were also among the losers.
On the flipside, HBL Engineering was top gainer in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index, the stock rose 9.19% to close at ₹515.90 after the company on Monday informed exchanges that it received five contracts from Indian Railways worth ₹762.56 crore.
Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) (6.41%), Godfrey Philips (5%), PVR Inox (4.60%) and Trident (4.45%) were also among the gainers.
