On August 27, both indices ended at their intraday lows, with the SENSEX slumping 539.34 points or 0.70% to close at 76,933.59. Meanwhile, NIFTY50 ended at 24,090.85, down by 116.90 points or 0.48%.

The markets also declined, as HDFC Bank, the country’s largest private sector lender, saw its shares hit a 52-week low.
On August 26, both indices ended at their intraday lows, with the SENSEX slumping 539.34 points or 0.70% to close at 76,933.59. Meanwhile, NIFTY50 ended at 24,090.85, down by 116.90 points or 0.48%.
The top losers in the index included Hindalco Industries (-2.75%), HDFC Bank (-2.23%), Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) (-2.01%), Shriram Finance (-1.48%) and Grasim Industries (-1.27%).
Shares of HDFC Bank, the country’s largest private sector lender, declined to hit a 52-week low on Thursday, August 27, following news reports that a securities class-action lawsuit was filed in the United States (US) against the lender and two senior executives.
As per a media report, the bank said that in the United States, these types of shareholder lawsuits are incredibly common after a company experiences a stock drop, and many companies listed in the U.S. routinely defend these lawsuits each year. “The Bank believes the lawsuit is without merit and intends to vigorously defend itself,” it further added.
On the other hand, Adani Enterprises (1.83%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (1.80%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (1.33%), Cipla (1.23%) and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) (1.01%) were among the other top gainers.
The stock of BEL advanced a day after the company said it had bagged an additional order. The Navratna Defence PSU has secured an additional order worth ₹730 crore since the last disclosure on August 10, 2026.
The major orders received include communication equipment, radar, avionics, tank subsystem, electro-optics, cyber security, perimeter security, medical electronics, EVM, jammers, batteries, spares, services and more.
NSE’s NIFTY Midcap 100 gauge declined 0.10% or 65.75 points to close at 64,035.45 on August 27.
The index was dragged down by Container Corporation of India (-4.63%), ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company (AMC) (-4.03%), NMDC (-2.82%), Housing & Urban Development Corporation (-2.65%) and National Aluminium Company (-2.50%), which were among the top laggards.
Shares of ICIC Prudential AMC declined as investors reacted to the promoter group entity Prudential Corp. selling a 2% stake in the company on the open market. In an exchange filing on Wednesday, ICICI Prudential AMC disclosed that one of its promoters, Prudential Corp., intended to sell equity shares to comply with the minimum public shareholding norms applicable as per the regulations.
The filing further mentioned that Prudential Corp. would sell a 2% stake of the company aggregating to 9,885,169 equity shares on the open market during the trading session on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
On the flip side, the top winners included Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) (4.44%), Kalyan Jewellers India (3.06%), Hitachi Energy India (2.28%), Laurus Labs (2.25%) and Bharat Forge (2.24%).
The NIFTY Smallcap 100 index declined by 0.13% or 26.65 points to end at 20,040.65.
The index was weighed down by Ramco Cements, which closed 5.25% lower. Shares of Ramco Cement fell amid a decline in the NIFTY Cement index.
The other top losers included Manappuram Finance (-5.25%), Capri Global Capital (-4.59%), Hindustan Copper (-3.16%), and HBL Engineering (-3.06%).
On the contrary, Whirlpool of India (9.37%), Wockhardt (4.72%), Welspun Corp (4.30%), Delhivery (3.79%) and Amber Enterprises India (3.15%) were among the top gainers.
