The Indian equity benchmarks were trading lower on Monday, September 28, as investor sentiment which was negative cautious tracking a surge in crude prices and rising bond yields in the United States was shaken further after Maharashtra government declared drought in the state.

The SENSEX fell as much as 1,064 points and NIFTY50 index touched an intraday low of 22,808 dragged down by weakness in index heavyweights like HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank, Larsen & Toubro, State Bank of India and Mahindra & Mahindra.

As of 2:10 pm, the SENSEX was down 997 points at 72,898 and NIFTY50 index dropped 319 points to 22,821.

Here are shares surging amid spike in volumes:
Tata Teleservices: Shares of the telecom company rose as much as 10% to an intraday high of 37.90 in an otherwise weak session amid spike in trading activity.

Trading volume in the stock jumped 57.6 times to 6.80 crore shares compared with an average volume of 11.81 lakh shares on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).

As many as 39.68 lakh shares changed hands on the BSE compared with an average of 2.07 lakh shares traded daily in the past two weeks.

GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals: Shares of the drug maker rose 6% to an intraday high of ₹2,986.65 amid spike in trading volumes.

Trading volumes spiked by 7.5 times to 3.86 lakh shares compared with an average volume of 51,854 shares on the NSE.

A total of 12,000 shares changed hands on the BSE compared with its two-week average of 6,423 shares.

MRPL: Shares of the country's leading petroleum refinery operator climbed 5.3% to an intraday high of ₹173.50 amid spike in volumes.

Trading volume in the stock jumped 4.5 times to 1.85 crore shares compared with an average volume of 40.97 lakh shares.

On the BSE, trading volume spiked by 3.55 times to 13.46 lakh shares as against its two-week average of 3.8 lakh shares.

Signatureglobal: Shares of the Gurugram-based real estate developer rose as much as 4.85% to an intraday high of ₹826.75after the company re-appointed Chandra Wadhwa as an Independent Director of the Company, not liable to retire by rotation, for the second term of five consecutive years w.e.f. 15th February, 2027 till 14th February, 2032.

Trading volume in the stock 4.3 times to 13.86 lakh shares changed hands on the NSE compared with an average volume of 3.19 lakh shares.

Great Eastern Shipping Company: Shares of the shipping company advanced 4.74% to an intraday high of ₹1,567.95 amid spike trading activity.

Trading volume jumped by 4.1 times 28.91 lakh shares compared with an average volume of 7 lakh shares.

A total of 2.07 lakh shares changed hands on the BSE compared with an average of 66,000 shares traded daily in the past two weeks.
