The Indian equity benchmarks were trading sharply lower on Friday, February 28. The SENSEX and NIFTY50 indices dropped 2% each at the day's lowest level. The NIFTY50 index dropped below its important psychological level of 22,150 and the 30-share SENSEX fell to an intraday low of 73,159.60. The selling pressure was much deeper in the mid- and small-cap space as Nifty Midcap 100 index tumbled 3.2% and Nifty Smallcap 100 index plunged 3.3%. The NIFTY50 index is on track to post its longest losing streak since 1996 and it has dropped over 5.5% so far this month.

Despite intense selling pressure in markets, 30 shares in the BSE500 basket of shares were witnessing buying interest. Reliance Industries, Polycab, HDFC Bank, Bandhan Bank and Coal India were among the gainers in the BSE500 index.
