NIFTY50 closed 317 points or 1.25% lower at 25,178, with a day low of 25,141. Meanwhile, BSE SENSEX declined 961 points or 1.1% to close at 81,287. SENSEX hit a day low of 81,159 today.

Why did the stock market crash today?

Domestic markets continue to remain highly volatile amid multiple factors. The recent spike in Brent Crude prices, which now trades over $72 amid uncertainty over the US-Iran nuclear talks is a headwind for the domestic economy in general, as India imports over 80% of its fuel requirement

Besides this, consistent sell-off by the Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) has also weighed on investors' sentiments. On February 26, FIIs sold Indian stocks worth ₹3,466 crore in the cash segment. Uncertainty around the US trade tariffs and persistent geopolitical tension between the US and Iran, as Washington deployed more ships to the Middle East and threatened military action if Tehran did not accept a nuclear deal, has also kept markets on a weak footing.

Broader market indices like NIFTY Midcap100 (-1.1%) and NIFTY Smallcap100 (-1.1%) also saw a sharp fall today. More than 250 stocks hit their 52-week low today as investors did profit booking amid weak market sentiments.

The volatility index, or India VIX, is up 4.89% to 13.70. Among NIFTY sectoral indices, NIFTY Realty (-2.2%), NIFTY Financial Services (-2.0%) and NIFTY Auto (-1.8%) were top losers, while NIFTY Media (+0.6%) and NIFTY IT (+0.1%) were top gainers.
