The Indian equity benchmarks ended higher on Friday, August 28. The SENSEX advanced as much as 424 points and NIFTY50 index touched an intraday high of 24,288 led by gains in index heavyweights like Infosys, HDFC Bank, Tata Consultancy Services, Axis Bank, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra.
The SENSEX ended 331 points higher at 77,265 and NIFTY50 index advanced 85 points to close at 24,175.
Asian markets ended mixed ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium later in the day.
Japan's Nikkei rose 0.4%, China's Shanghai Composite index slipped 0.11%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 0.07% and South Korea's KOSPI dropped 1.8%.
Back home, eight of 15 major sector gauges compiled by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) ended higher led by the NIFTY IT index's 3.5% surge. NIFTY Metal, Pharma, Healthcare, PSU Bank and Media indices also rose between 0.2% and 0.75%.
On the other hand, NIFTY Bank, FMCG, Auto, Private Bank, Realty and Consumer Durables indices closed lower.
Broader markets ended marginally higher as NIFTY Midcap 100 index ended on a flat note while NIFTY Smallcap 100 index advanced 0.2%.
Among the individual shares, Tata Teleservices Maharashtra shares surged as much as 11%, its biggest single day move since May 22, 2025, to hit an intraday high of ₹40.50 after Tata Communications and Tata Tele Business Services (TTBS) announced a strategic collaboration to accelerate AI adoption among India’s small and medium businesses.
The company said that the collaboration combines their complementary strengths to unlock a large, underserved market opportunity and expand the total addressable market (TAM) for both organisations.
Tejas Networks shares rose 13% to hit an intraday high of ₹577 after the company said that it received a letter of intent from Tata Consultancy Services Limited for supply of RAN equipment, accessories & installation materials for BSNL 4G mobile network for 18,685 sites, valued at ₹1,537 crore.
Ola Electric Mobility shares soared nearly 6% to touch an intraday high of ₹39.77 after the company launched its new S1Z scooter range. The new scooters are the first in India to feature Ola’s indigenously developed Bharat Cell LFP technology for the mass market.
Tata Consultancy Services was top gainer in the NIFTY50 index, the stock rose 4.16% to close at ₹2,342. Tech Mahindra, Infosys, HCL Tech, Wipro, Bajaj Auto, HDFC Bank, Hindalco and Tata Motors PV also rose between 1% and 3.5%.
On the flip side, ITC, Ultratech Cement, Asian Paints, SBI Life, Eicher Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Finserv, IndiGo and Adani Ports were top losers in the NIFTY50 index.
The overall market breadth was positive as 1,918 shares ended higher while 1,561 closed lower on the NSE.
