NTPC on Friday said that the first phase of its wholly-owned step-down subsidiary NTPC REL has been declared on commercial operation with effect from Wednesday.

The announcement comes in the wake of successful commissioning and due approvals for the first part capacity of 160 MW out of 320 MW Bhainsara Solar PV Project in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan belonging to NTPC REL, which is a step-down subsidiary of NTPC through its wholly-owned subsidiary NTPC Green Energy.

Following the announcement, shares of NTPC were trading over 1% higher on Friday.

During the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, NTPC reported a 14% year-on-year (YoY) rise in its revenue from operations at ₹44,419 crore. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) rose 10% YoY to ₹13,081 crore. Net profit for the period rose 11% YoY to ₹4,511 crore.

The firm has forayed into the nuclear power sector and has signed a supplementary joint venture (JV) agreement with Nuclear Power Corporation of India for development of nuclear power projects.

The firm stated that a project of 2.8 GW capacity is under active consideration for award and it is also exploring small modular reactor technology in collaboration with BARC. On the global level, the firm commissioned a 1,320 MW thermal power plant in Bangladesh and is developing a 50 MW (extendable to 120 MW) solar power project in Sri Lanka.

The company is looking to add 7 gigawatts (GW) of conventional capacity in the next three years and 16 GW of renewable energy capacity in the next three years. As far as its outlook is concerned, NTPC expects both peak load demand and energy requirement to rise at a healthy pace.

Shares of NTPC have risen over 34% since the beginning of the year. The stock has gained over 88% in the last one year.
