Stock market today: On Thursday, March 13, the equity benchmark indices slipped into negative territory during the afternoon session after opening in positive territory.

During the intraday trade, Bharat Electronics, ONGC, Larsen & Toubro, State Bank of India, and ICICI Bank were the biggest contributors, rising as much as 2.31%.

Among the biggest laggards were Shriram Finance, Hindalco, Tata Motors, Wipro, and Hero MotorCorp, losing as much as 2.51%.

High-volume buzzers

During the day, some of the stocks saw a spurt in trading volumes on Thursday, which includes companies like MTNL, Gandhi Special Tubes, Honda India Power, Hatsun Agro Products, and Birla Corporation.

According to data on the stock exchanges, the number of MTNL shares that changed hands at 12:30 PM on Thursday was already over 15.55 times higher than the daily average on the stock counter.

Shares of MTNL jumped as much as 18% during the morning trade after the Parliament was informed that the telecom firm has earned ₹2,134 crore via asset monetisation.

At 12:40 PM, shares of the state-owned MTNL were trading at ₹48.72 apiece, surging 12.67% on the National Stock Exchange. Its total market capitalisation stood at ₹3,069.36 crore.

Volumes at the Gandhi Special Tubes counter were 13.10 times higher than the daily average. Honda India Power counter witnessed 7.04 times higher volume than the daily average.

Similarly, counters of Hatsun Agro and Hitachi Corporation saw 6.34- and 5.30-times higher volume than the daily average, respectively. While volumes at the Birla Corporation counter were 4.67 times higher than the daily average.

A volume in the stock volume is the number of shares traded in a specific period. A spurt in volume means the stock is witnessing a lot of interest or activity happening around the equity market.
