Key factors: Why are IT stocks falling today?

Fall in Dollar: The US Dollar was trading weaker against the Indian Rupee in Monday’s market session amid global currency market volatility, in turn weighing down the sentiment for Indian IT companies listed in the equity market.

Investing.com data showed that the Indian currency was trading 0.23% stronger at 95.664 against the benchmark US dollar, in comparison to 95.44 at the previous currency market close.

With the majority of the Indian IT company clients being based out of the United States, a lower dollar rate translates to a direct impact on company margins, as the revenues move based on the dollar appreciation or depreciation in the market.

The exchange data also showed that the US dollar spot index was trading 0.18% weaker during the trading session on Monday at 99.375, compared to 99.559 apiece at the previous market close.

According to a Bloomberg report, the US dollar was falling on Monday against its peers as the softer-than-expected US economic data reduced the potential for the US Federal Reserve to increase its benchmark interest rates at the September 2026 meeting.

Geopolitical risk: With the elevated geopolitical risk sentiment in the market, investors were trading cautiously as there were no signs of a US-Iran peace deal at the end of the 60-day deadline, which was agreed upon in the MoU signed by both parties back in June 2026.

On Monday, the deadline for the peace negotiations ended, and so far no plans or updates have been announced for the conflict in West Asia.

As per the MoU, Iran and the United States had options to extend the time; however, so far no information on negotiations has been announced, increasing the uncertainty of a near-term end to the conflict.

Rising oil prices: Due to the heightened risk sentiment, crude oil prices have also increased in the global market, climbing back to over $89 per barrel (bbl) on Monday’s market after witnessing a marginal pullback last week, trading around $87 per bbl.

At 11:34 am (IST), global benchmark Brent crude oil prices were trading 0.21% lower at $88.27 per bbl after the intraday high, in comparison to $88.52 per bbl at the previous commodity market close.

Profit-booking cues: Investors were also focused on the major profit-booking cues in the overall equity market on August 17, with investors taking a stock-specific approach, switching to defensive sector bets rather than high-growth sectors like IT.

On Monday, India’s volatility indicator, the Nifty India VIX, surged 3% amid weak momentum and investor sentiment.

So while domestic sectors like Media, Defence, and Consumer durables were among the gainers, others like PSU Bank and IT were among the top laggards on August 17.
