Hindustan Zinc names Amarendu Prakash as new CEO & Whole-Time Director; key details

Vedanta Group company Hindustan Zinc’s board of directors, on Friday, July 24, approved the appointment of Amarendu Prakash as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Whole-Time Director and key managerial personnel of the company. The mining and metal producer also reported its earnings for the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year (Q1 FY27).

The leadership transition will take effect on August 1, 2026, according to a regulatory filing.

Prakash, with over three decades of experience in the steel industry, spanning operations, project execution, technology, and strategic management, previously held several key leadership positions within SAIL (Steel Authority of India Ltd).

He served as the Chairman & Managing Director of SAIL from 2023 to 2026, it further added.

“During his tenure, he led transformative initiatives spanning operational excellence, capacity expansion, digital transformation, and organisational performance across one of India's largest steel producers,” Hindustan Zinc stated.

Amit Gupta assumes role as CFO

Hindustan Zinc also said that Amit Gupta assumed the role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the company on June 1, 2026.

“A qualified Chartered Accountant with over two decades of experience, he brings deep expertise in strategic finance, capital allocation, business transformation, cost optimization, and corporate governance across Vedanta Group companies,” the filing read.

The firm also appointed Aashhima V Khanna as the Company Secretary and Compliance Officer.

Q1 earnings snapshot

Hindustan Zinc posted a 145% year-on-year (YoY) rise in its consolidated net profit to ₹5,469 crore in Q1 FY27, in comparison to ₹2,234 crore in the same period a year earlier.

The surge in net profit comes after a healthy growth in revenues from core operations, to the tune of 77% YoY during the quarter under review, to ₹13,747 crore, compared with ₹7,771 crore in the June quarter of the 2025-26 financial year (Q1 FY26). Read More.

Hindustan Zinc stock performance

Shares of Hindustan Zinc closed 0.15% higher at ₹531.95 per unit on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Friday, following the result announcement.

The scrip has gained 3% in the past week but lost more than 1% over the month. On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, it has fallen 13%.

While the stock hit a 52-week high of ₹733 apiece on January 27, 2026, it touched a year’s low of ₹413.50 apiece on August 1, 2025.
