US benchmark three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) rose as much as 0.8% intraday to $14,533 a tonne on September 7, according to Bloomberg and other outlets. The rise took prices above the previous record of $14,527.50 set in January.
Copper has gained about 47% over the past 12 months, driven by strong demand from power grids, renewable energy equipment, artificial intelligence (AI) data centres and electric vehicles. Concerns that supply growth may not keep pace with rising demand have further supported copper prices.
Copper is a key industrial commodity widely used in semiconductors, batteries and power grids due to its high electrical conductivity.
Analysts expect copper demand to continue rising over the medium to long term as investment in power-intensive AI data centres and the grid infrastructure supporting them accelerates.
According to a report by S&P Global dated December 4, 2025, by 2035, 4 million to 5 million mt of copper demand will make India the second-largest copper-consuming region behind China.
That demand growth should also favour local production gains through increased recycling and use of tougher concentrates, according to a copper-dedicated panel at the December 2-4 Resourcing Tomorrow conference in London.
"The global copper market benefits from the megatrends of urbanisation, electrification, digitalisation and the clean energy transition, as the metal is one sure thing they have in common for the sheer amount of electricity in play, according to Juan Ignacio Díaz, president of the International Copper Association, which through its 35 members represents half of the world's copper industry," the statement said.
The association sees 70% of the world's copper demand concentrated in seven big manufacturing regions -- China, India, the US, Europe, Mexico, South Korea and Japan -- and across six applications -- motors, cables, transformers, EVs, air conditioning and heat pumps.
Hindustan Copper Ltd (HCL) is a Schedule A, Mini Ratna Category-I Central Public Sector Enterprise under the administrative control of the Ministry of Mines. Incorporated in 1967, it is the only company in India engaged in copper ore mining and holds all the operating mining leases for copper ore in the country.
The company operates copper mines at Malanjkhand in Madhya Pradesh, Khetri in Rajasthan and Ghatsila in Jharkhand, and has facilities for copper processing and downstream products, including a continuous cast copper wire rod plant at Taloja, Maharashtra.
HCL currently focuses on exploration, mining, and beneficiation of copper ore, with copper concentrate being its principal product. The Government of India held a 66.14% stake in the company as of March 31, 2026.
