Both the bourses will be shut on Tuesday, March 31, on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti. Also known as Mahaveer Janma Kalyanak, Mahavir Jayanti is an important Jain festival that commemorates the birth of Lord Mahavir.
Furthermore, March 31 is also the last day of the 2025-26 financial year (FY26). April 1 marks the beginning of the new 2026-27 fiscal year (FY27).
The exchanges will also remain closed on Friday, April 3, on account of Good Friday, marking a long weekend.
In April, the stock market will remain shut on two days (excluding the weekends), including April 3 and April 14.
The NSE and BSE will observe a trading holiday on Tuesday, April 14, on the occasion of Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti.
In May, too, trading holidays fall on two days. The exchanges will remain closed on Friday, May 1, on account of Maharashtra Day and Thursday, May 28, for Bakri Id.

Out of the 16 trading holidays in the calendar year 2026 (CY26), 12 remain.
Furthermore, the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) will observe partial closure on March 31.
While the domestic commodity exchange will be closed for its morning session from 9 am to 5 pm on Tuesday, it will resume trading for its evening session from 5 pm to 11:30/11:55 pm. However, the MCX will remain fully shut on Good Friday.
While Tuesday, March 31, has been marked as a bank holiday by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, all agency banks will remain open to facilitate year-end transactions for FY26.
“The Government of India has made a request to keep all branches of the banks dealing with Government receipts and payments open for transactions on March 31, 2026 (Tuesday-Public Holiday) so as to account for all the Government transactions relating to receipts and payments in the Financial Year 2025-26 itself,” the central bank said.
“Accordingly, agency banks are advised to keep all their branches dealing with government business open on March 31, 2026 (Tuesday),” it added.
Furthermore, banks across India will remain closed on Wednesday, April 1, to facilitate the annual closing of bank accounts.
Bank branches in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram will be shut on April 2 on account of Maundy Thursday.
Additionally, banks across all the major Indian cities, except Agartala, Guwahati, Jaipur, Jammu, and Srinagar, will observe a holiday on April 1 for Good Friday.
