Willie Walsh takes charge as IndiGo CEO, succeeds Pieter Elbers

Aviation veteran Willie Walsh on Monday assumed charge as the chief executive officer of IndiGo, taking over the reins of the country's largest airline nearly five months after his appointment was announced.

The airline said Walsh will lead IndiGo's next phase of growth and global expansion, with a focus on strengthening operational performance, expanding its international network and enhancing customer experience.

Walsh's appointment was announced on March 31, less than three weeks after the sudden exit of former CEO Pieter Elbers, who stepped down following widespread operational disruptions faced by the airline in December last year.

Before joining IndiGo, Walsh served as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a role he held until July 31.

He has also headed British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling and Level.

As CEO, IndiGo said Walsh would lead the airline's overall management and strategic direction, with a focus on accelerating its global growth trajectory, driving operational excellence, strengthening network and commercial strategy, and further enhancing customer experience.

On assuming office, Walsh said IndiGo had built a remarkable legacy over the past two decades and established itself among the world's largest airlines in a relatively short period.

"With India becoming one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, the opportunities ahead for IndiGo are immense. There could not be a more exciting and opportune time for me to join IndiGo than now," he said.

At the time of announcing his appointment in March, IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta had described Walsh as an "exceptional global aviation leader" whose experience in managing large-scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics would help steer the carrier through its next phase of growth.

Managing Director Rahul Bhatia had then said Walsh's global perspective, operational expertise and deep industry experience made him well suited to lead IndiGo at a pivotal stage in its expansion.

Walsh began his aviation career as a pilot before serving as chief operating officer and later chief executive of Aer Lingus. He went on to head British Airways from 2005 to 2011 and IAG from 2011 to 2020 before taking over as IATA Director General.
