IndiGo recently reported a net profit of ₹3,068 crore for the January-March quarter of FY25, up 62% year-on-year.

IndiGo on Wednesday announced the appointment of Vikram Singh Mehta as chairman of its Board, succeeding Dr Venkataramani Sumantran, who stepped down after completing his five-year term.

Mehta, who has been a board member of the airline since May 2022, brings decades of leadership experience from both public service and the corporate sector. He began his career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1978 and later held prominent roles in the energy and policy sectors.

He previously served as the chairman of the Shell Group of Companies in India and CEO of Shell Markets and Shell Chemicals in Egypt. Mehta is currently chairman of the public policy think tank Centre for Social and Economic Progress, and a former executive chairman of Brookings India.

Mehta holds a degree in Mathematics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and two master’s degrees from Oxford University and Tufts University. He was recognised as “Businessman of the Year” by Asia House in 2010 and named “Best Independent Director” by Asia Centre for Corporate Governance and Sustainability in 2016.

Sumantran, who was appointed Chairman in May 2022, played a key role in steering the airline’s post-COVID recovery and expansion.

"Dr. Sumantran was appointed as the Chairman of the Board in May 2022 and post-COVID, navigated the Board during IndiGo’s strong recovery and incredible growth over the past three years,” IndiGo said in a statement.

IndiGo recently reported a net profit of ₹3,068 crore for the January-March quarter of FY25, up 62% year-on-year. Revenue from operations rose 24% to ₹22,152 crore, while EBITDAR surged 57% to ₹6,948 crore. EBITDAR margin improved 660 basis points to 31.4%.

“We are proud to report healthy financial performance for this quarter and the financial year 2025,” said IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, adding that record passenger volumes and operational efficiencies contributed to the airline’s full-year net profit of ₹7,258.4 crore.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, carried 118.6 million passengers in FY25.
