The United States Administration has notified an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports will be imposed on August 27. The duties will take effect from 12:01 am Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

According to the Department of Homeland Security, a specified rate of duty on imports of articles that are products of India will be imposed.

"The duties set out in the Annex to this document are effective with respect to products of India that are entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 AM Eastern Daylight Time, on August 27, 2025," the notification stated.

US President Trump had stated that the extra levies were pressed due to New Delhi's continued buying of Russian oil.

"I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil. Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 percent," the order had said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday stated that he can't compromise on the interests of farmers, cattle-rearers and small-scale industries, cautioning that "pressure on us may increase, but we will bear it". His remarks come before the 50% tariff kicks in.

Without naming anyone, PM Modi asserted that world politics now largely revolves around economic interests and everyone is concerned about just themselves.

"In such a scenario, I want to tell small entrepreneurs, farmers and cattle-rearers that for Modi, your interest is paramount. My government will never compromise on your interests. No matter how much pressure comes, we will bear it. But, your interests will never be harmed," affirmed the PM.
