Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the three-day ‘Semicon India - 2025’ conference at Yashobhoomi in the national capital, asserting that the world trusts India and is ready to build the future of semiconductors with it.

“India is now moving beyond the backend to become a full-stack semiconductor nation. The day is not far when India's smallest chip will drive the biggest change in the world. Our journey started late, but nothing can stop us now,” Modi said while addressing the inaugural session.

He underlined how the global economy, once shaped by oil, is now being driven by chips.

“Oil was black gold but chips are diamonds. Oil shaped the last century and the fate of the world was tied to oil wells. In the 21st century, power is concentrated in the small chip. Though tiny, it has the strength to drive the world’s progress at great speed,” he said.

The prime minister noted that an investment of USD 18 billion is being made in 10 semiconductor projects approved since 2021.

Highlighting the government’s push to create a resilient and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem, Modi said India is also working on a 'Critical Minerals Mission' and is committed to meeting the growing demand for rare minerals essential for chip manufacturing.

"We are working on the next phase of the India Semiconductor Mission," Modi said.

The conference, being held from September 2-4, will deliberate on semiconductor fabs, advanced packaging, artificial intelligence, R&D, smart manufacturing and investment opportunities.

Over 20,750 participants, including more than 2,500 delegates from 48 countries, over 150 speakers with 50 global leaders among them, and 350 exhibitors, are attending the event.

The prime minister will also participate in a CEOs roundtable on September 3.

Semicon India conferences have previously been held in Bengaluru (2022), Gandhinagar (2023) and Greater Noida (2024).
