Domestic PV sales have slowed over the past two years, particularly in the small car segment, due to affordability pressures.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd on Wednesday reported a 3% increase in total sales at 1,89,665 units in September, driven by record-high exports.

The company had sold 1,84,727 units in the same month last year.

However, domestic volumes fell due to logistical constraints.

In September 2025, the country’s largest carmaker sold 1,35,711 units in the domestic market, compared to 1,48,061 units in September 2024, Maruti Suzuki said in a statement.

Sales to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) rose to 11,750 units last month from 8,938 units in the year-ago period.

Exports jumped 52% to an all-time monthly high of 42,204 units against 27,728 units in September last year.

“The GST reform has significantly improved customer sentiment as reflected in the highest-ever deliveries of 1,65,000 units (first 8 days) of the ongoing Navratri festive period,” the company said.

Utility vehicle sales, including models such as Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto and Jimny, stood at 48,695 units as against 61,549 units in the same month last year.

Sales of mini cars like Alto and S-Presso declined to 7,208 units from 10,363 units, while compact models, including Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift and WagonR, rose to 66,882 units from 60,480 units.

During the first half of FY26 (April-September), the company’s total sales stood at 10.78 lakh units, marginally up from 10.63 lakh units in the same period of FY25.

Tata Motors sales

Meanwhile, Tata Motors on Wednesday reported its best-ever monthly passenger vehicle sales of 60,907 units in September, a year-on-year increase of 47%.

In the domestic market, the company said, its dispatches to dealers rose 45% to 59,667 units against 41,063 units in the year-ago period, Tata Motors said in a statement.

"The passenger vehicles industry marked a sharp upswing in demand during September 2025, following the rollout of GST 2.0, further buoyed by festive tailwinds. This surge in demand sets a promising tone for sustained growth in the months ahead," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Managing Director Shailesh Chandra said.
