Online travel services platform MakeMyTrip on Wednesday announced the launch of a part payment option for international flights. Under the service, travellers will be able to book international flight tickets and get a confirmed booking by paying 10 to 40% of the total amount as an upfront payment.

The exact proportion of the upfront fare will be decided by various factors including the airline, the travel sector, and the advance purchase window. The payment for the remaining balance will have to be completed either before the travel date or within 45 days of booking, whichever comes first, at no additional cost.

"This industry-first feature addresses a common pain point for travellers, particularly larger families or groups, who may find it challenging to pay the entire ticket amount upfront when booking an international flight. Users opting for the part payment option can modify their confirmed bookings after completing the full payment as per fare rules," MakeMyTrip said in a statement.

"This industry-first part-payment feature exemplifies our commitment, empowering more Indians to book international flights with greater convenience and flexibility,” the PTI report quoted Saujanya Shrivastava, Chief Operating Officer of Flights, Holidays & Gulf at MakeMyTrip.

The company stated that the initial response to the new service has been encouraging. Many solo travellers, couples and families have already used the part payment feature for both short and long international flights, it added.

To use the part payment option on the MakeMyTrip platform:
  • Go to the MakeMyTrip website or mobile application
  • Choose the international flight
  • Select the part-payment option
  • Pay the upfront fare
  • Complete the payment before the due date

More about MakeMyTrip

MakeMyTrip has introduced many other services to make travel more convenient for its customers. Some of these services include zero cancellation charges for unforeseen events, fare lock to lock prices of a ticket at a time and book the ticket at the same price later within a particular time window and date change allowing users to reschedule their flights up to two hours before departure.

In November last year, the company launched a multi-currency payment feature, enabling users to pay for flights and hotels in key global currencies including the US dollar, Euro, British pound and more. This also allows users to receive refunds and vouchers in the same currency they used for payments and streamlines the transaction process on the platform. The move was aimed at attracting more international travellers. Before this, it had also introduced General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance to make its platform accessible in over 150 countries, as per a company press release.

As per Statista, the company’s revenue in FY24 stood at nearly $782 million in India. In November last year, the travel company entered into a business transfer agreement to acquire Happay’s expense management platform from CRED. The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. CRED, a members-only app, enables users to manage credit cards and make payments. By acquiring Happay, MakeMyTrip aims to enhance its corporate travel offerings and strengthen its expense management solutions, as per media reports.
