Gautam Adani, the chief of ports-to-power conglomerate Adani Group, has taken the top spot in the Hurun India Rich list 2024 released on Thursday, August 29.
Adani, 62, along with his family logged a 95% jump in wealth in the last year to ₹1,161,800 crore. This takes him ahead of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani, who has slipped from the first to the second spot in the elite list.
Ambani and his family's wealth stands at ₹1,014,700 crore, down 25% as compared to last year, as per the release issued by Hurun India.
Shiv Nadar and family, who head HCL, are a distant third with their wealth stated as ₹314,000 crore.
The fourth on the list is Serum Institute of India's Cyrus Poonawalla and family, with wealth of ₹289,800 crore, whereas, the fifth position is held by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries' managing director Dilip Shanghvi, whose wealth is seen at ₹249,900 crore.
In its press release, Hurun India stated that India now has 334 billionaires, logging a jump of 75 billionaires as compared to the last year.
The number of individuals in the country whose wealth exceeds ₹1,000 crore is 1,539, up by 220 individuals as against the past year.
The cumulative wealth has increased by 46%, while average wealth has increased by 25%, it added.
"1,334 individuals saw their wealth increase or stay the same, of which 272 are new faces, whilst 205 saw their wealth drop and there were 45 dropouts," the release said.
