SUMMARY
According to FADA, May recorded the best-ever performance for passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, tractors and overall vehicle registrations.

Passenger vehicle sales surged 23.25%, while two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and tractors also posted growth.
India's vehicle retail sales rose 9.6% year-on-year in May on the back of strong demand for passenger vehicles in rural markets, automobile dealers' body FADA said on Monday.
Total vehicle registrations across categories stood at 25,31,067 units last month as compared with 23,10,858 units in May 2025, marking the best-ever May performance for overall retail sales, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
Passenger vehicle (PV) retail sales emerged as the strongest performer, climbing 23.25% to 4,02,591 units from 3,26,790 units in the year-ago month.
Two-wheeler registrations, which account for the bulk of India's vehicle market, increased 7.54% to 18,44,947 units from 17,15,986 units a year earlier, while commercial vehicle sales grew 5.29% to 83,823 units.
Three-wheeler sales rose 3.56% to 1,11,526 units, while tractor registrations increased 11.17% to 83,092 units.
Wheeled construction equipment registrations, however, declined 17.51% to 5,088 units.
FADA President C S Vigneshwar said the auto retail sector maintained its growth momentum despite an above-normal heatwave, fuel-price pressures and the evolving situation in West Asia.
"As anticipated in our April 2026 release, the watch-outs we had flagged — an above-normal heatwave, fuel-price pressure and the evolving West Asia situation — did come into play during May 2026, and yet Indian auto retail has held its growth trajectory with May'26 registering the best ever May across 3W, PV, Tractors and Overall registrations," Vigneshwar said.
He noted that the month-on-month decline of 6.75% reflected the usual seasonal moderation after April and a delayed southwest monsoon, which kept May largely a pre-sowing month across much of rural India.
Dealers reported a revival in the small-car segment alongside sustained demand for SUVs, healthy booking pipelines and the impact of new product launches.
The data comes as India's economy grew 7.8% in the March quarter, helping full-year growth for fiscal 2025-26 reach 7.7%.
Dealers said a rise in fuel prices accelerated consumer interest in alternative-fuel vehicles.
Electric vehicle penetration in the two-wheeler segment rose to 9.25% from 6.11% a year earlier, while EVs accounted for 6.63% of passenger vehicle sales.
CNG-powered passenger vehicles represented 23.34% of the segment's sales.
Overall EV penetration across vehicle categories crossed 11% for the first time and reached a record high during the month, FADA said. The dealers' body, however, flagged rising inventory levels in the passenger vehicle segment.
Inventory increased to 31-33 days at the end of May from 28-30 days in April, moving further away from FADA's recommended benchmark of 21 days.
Vigneshwar urged passenger vehicle manufacturers to maintain disciplined dispatches during the seasonally softer June period to prevent excessive stock build-up at dealerships.
More than half of dealers surveyed expect sales growth in June, while 59% anticipate growth over the June-August period, supported by monsoon progress, kharif sowing activity and improving rural cash flows.
However, high temperatures, fuel-price trends and developments in West Asia remain key risks to demand and operating costs, dealers said.
