The supplies are part of the premium Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project being executed by a BHEL-led consortium with TRSL.

A flag-off ceremony for the first set of traction transformers was held at BHEL’s Jhansi plant, the company said in a statement.

BHEL Director (IS&P) Bani Varma and Director (E, R&D) S M Ramanathan virtually flagged off the first consignment.

Earlier, traction converters for the same project were dispatched from BHEL’s Bengaluru unit.

The development strengthens BHEL’s strategic entry into the semi-high-speed propulsion segment, with operational speeds of up to 160 kmph and a design speed of 180 kmph.

The traction transformers are being sent to Kolkata for final assembly of the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains.

The traction motors for the project have been developed and manufactured at BHEL’s Bhopal unit.

BHEL said its Jhansi plant has also secured an order for Rail Borne Maintenance Vehicles (RBMVs), used for construction, inspection, repair and upkeep of railway tracks. RBMVs will be designed and manufactured domestically at the Jhansi unit.

BHEL said the RBMVs will help enhance track safety, ride comfort and asset life by reducing manual labour and improving precision in maintenance operations.

Meanwhile, Indian Railways is set to introduce the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express, aimed at long-distance travel. The first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is expected to operate on the Guwahati–Howrah route, connecting Assam and West Bengal.

Designed for overnight journeys, the 16-coach train will have a passenger capacity of 823 and feature ergonomic sleeper berths, automatic doors, advanced suspension systems, enhanced luggage space, modern toilets and improved safety and security systems.

Capable of running at speeds of up to 180 kmph, the train is expected to significantly reduce travel time while offering a quieter and more comfortable travel experience.
