Banks closed in most states on May 1; check where they’re open

On May 1, banks will be shut in a majority of states and Union Territories, including Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Goa, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir.

While May Day is observed nationwide to mark Labour Day, bank holidays will vary depending on the state and local observances.

In Maharashtra, banks will remain shut to commemorate Maharashtra Day, marking the formation of the state in 1960.

Several other states will observe Labour Day as a public holiday.

However, bank branches will remain open in Gujarat, Odisha, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Meghalaya and Nagaland, as per the RBI’s state-wise holiday matrix.

Customers are advised to plan their branch visits accordingly, although internet banking, mobile banking and ATM services will continue to function normally.

During the month, banks will also remain closed on May 16, May 26, May 27 and May 28 in different states, apart from Sundays and 2nd and 4th Saturday.

In West Bengal, banks will be shut on May 9 for the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, while Sikkim will observe a holiday on May 16 for State Day.

Tripura will observe a holiday on May 26 on account of the birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Banks in multiple states will also remain closed on either May 27 and May 28 for Eid-ul-Adha (Bakri Eid), with the holiday observed on either day depending on local customs and moon sighting.
