SUMMARY

Bajaj's CNG motorcycle could be the most efficient motorcycle in India, and probably the world with up to 100 km/kg of mileage. The company claims it can reduce monthly fuel expenses by half.

Bajaj Auto sales grew 11% year-on-year to 43.5 lakh units in FY24

Bajaj Auto is one of India's leading two-wheeler manufacturers

Bajaj Auto is all set to launch the world’s first-ever compressed natural gas (CNG) + petrol powered motorcycle in the world on July 5, 2024.

There has been a lot of buzz around the new Bajaj motorcycle, which promises to be highly fuel efficient and practical. It was previously speculated to be named 'Bruzer', but recent reports indicate the name could be 'Freedom125’, as briefly revealed on the company’s website.

This is a big launch for Bajaj as it is pushing the boundaries of smart and innovative mobility solutions. The third-largest motorcycle maker by sales, Bajaj said it will disrupt the entry level domestic motorcycle market with the launch of the world's first CNG-run motorcycle, which it claims will halve the monthly fuel expense.

Targeting entry-level segment

The bi-fuel motorcycle, priced at a premium, will challenge Hero MotoCorp's dominance. Bajaj aims to capitalise on the mileage-conscious entry-level segment. One in every two motorcycles sold in the local market belongs to the entry level. Bajaj Auto's share in the 100-110cc motorcycles at present stands at 8%.

Similar to the passenger vehicle market, which shifted towards CNG when it was introduced for commercial uses, this could also kickstart a shift in the two-wheeler segment to more sustainable options.

The move to launch CNG-run motorcycles aligns with the government's carbon reduction goals – the government is giving a push to the CNG network, with over 100 new pumps being added – and leverages Bajaj's experience in CNG three-wheelers. Today, almost 70% of the districts of India are covered by a CNG network.

Launching first in Maharashtra and Gujarat, Bajaj plans to expand its CNG motorcycle portfolio in India and select-international markets.

While the Bajaj CNG bike is expected to be affordable, they will offer multiple variants, which will allow the brand to cater to a wider range of potential buyers in the future.
