Apple on Thursday announced new clean energy and environmental initiatives in India, including an investment of about ₹100 crore with renewable energy developer CleanMax to develop over 150 megawatts of renewable energy capacity across the country.
The iPhone maker said the initial investment would support the development of more than 150 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity, enough to power about 150,000 Indian households annually, as it seeks to cut emissions across its supply chain and achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
Apple and CleanMax said they have entered into a strategic co-investment partnership aimed at accelerating decarbonisation in India’s commercial and industrial sector through scaled renewable energy deployment.
The planned renewable energy capacity would be enough to power an average 1.5 lakh Indian households annually, with scope for future expansion, Apple said.
“At Apple, our commitment to the environment is also a driving force for innovation — across the company and around the world,” Sarah Chandler said in a statement.
“We’re proud to expand our efforts to invest in India’s clean energy economy and protect the country’s precious natural resources,” she added.
Kuldeep Jain, Managing Director and Founder, CleanMax, said the company was “thrilled” to expand its partnership with Apple.
“At CleanMax, we see ourselves as a long-term net-zero partner to corporates, and we are proud to continue working with a company like Apple that continues to push the ecosystem to think bigger, move faster, and build more responsibly,” Jain said.
The announcement comes as global technology companies ramp up investments in renewable energy and sustainable supply chains in India, one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy markets.
CleanMax described India as a critical market in the rapidly growing corporate renewable energy segment, adding that such strategic co-investment models are helping accelerate industrial decarbonisation through long-term capital and scalable clean energy infrastructure.
Apple had earlier worked with CleanMax on rooftop solar projects to power its offices and retail stores in India entirely through renewable energy.
Apart from renewable energy, Apple also announced a partnership with WWF-India to support recycling and waste management programmes aimed at reducing plastic pollution.
Apple also said it is partnering with impact investment organisation Acumen to support six early-stage green enterprises working in waste management, circular economy, regenerative agriculture, and sustainable livelihoods through grants, mentorship, and technical support.
The company said it has reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% compared to 2015 levels, while its revenue rose 78% during the same period, according to its latest Environmental Progress Report.
